In certain industries, such as defense, it is standard practice to undergo a series of background checks. This helps determine whether you have a prior criminal record. Others aim to determine whether you are in any way vulnerable to being compromised by outside influences, such as performing a credit check. Being standard practice, they are going to find out one way or the other. So it is best to agree to any background checks and volunteer anything you have concerns about. This could provide context and showcase your transparency and integrity.

Here is more information regarding BAE Systems background checks and investigation before granting an employee security clearance: "Our business serves our nation's vital interests, helping protect the security of our country and its allies. As such, many of our available positions require a security clearance. The first step in the clearance process is to complete a security questionnaire. The questionnaire is dependent on the level of clearance required by the job. After you submit your security questionnaire, the U.S. Government will begin its background investigation. The investigation may include a personal interview, an interview of your family, friends, neighbors, classmates, supervisors, and even a polygraph if the position requires access to Special Access Program (SAP) or Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI)."

Try not to come across as surprised or unprepared by any of the questions you are posed in the set. You always want to exude confidence and communicate clearly. You also want to avoid sounding too rehearsed, as this can make you seem wooden and boorish. Practice in front of your computer's camera, maintaining eye contact with the lens as if speaking face-to-face with a person, and keep at it until you come across as relaxed and natural.
