Many candidates dread this question, not knowing how to navigate it. They worry anything they say could be used against them as a reason not to hire them. However, owning your failures and learning from them exhibits strength of character and re-categorizes failure as a success. No one can hold over you something you already own. A company would likely be willing to take a calculated risk on hiring someone who makes a one-off mistake versus someone who makes the same mistake over and over again, never learning from them, and is thereby hesitant to admit to them. Consider how BAE Systems define its core value, Innovative, "Learning constantly, from successes and failures."

More often than not, when a person recalls stressful situations from their past, they'll revert to the emotional state of stress of that situation. The assessment model will screen your non-verbal cues for signs of stress. So avoid crinkling your eyebrows. Instead, relax your forehead and the corners of your eyes. Tilt your head slightly and nod slowly. Speak softly and with ease. You want to come across as relaxed and confident. Focus on what you learned, and let your confidence and emotional maturity shine.

"I worked hard to pioneer a new cross-functional communication tool, but it never took off. The other department simply didn't prefer my new method, saying it was too specific to our department. So, I decided to work with their department to understand their subculture within our company. After a couple of months over there, I realized where I'd gone wrong and reverse-engineered my approach to the previous system. After two more overhauls, I was able to create a better, albeit not perfect, method for our departments to operate together. Although the lines of communication weren't open and friendly, they did contain an instant transfer of data and metadata by seamlessly working over the cloud and providing all the information needed to better and more effectively work together."
