Boeing recognizes the benefit of helping their employees have a strong work-life balance. It helps their people avoid burnout syndrome, increases job satisfaction, and contributes to employee retention. In some of their global offices, Boeing even provides an emotional well-being coaching benefit to improve employees' emotional well-being, help them navigate change, and have better work-life balance. But before considering any hire, they need to ensure they have a strong foundation for a balanced professional and personal life. This will aid them in ensuring they don't bring someone on board who habitually brings their personal problems with them to work, or chronically runs behind on their deadlines and brings their work home.
Here are some more of the benefits Boeing offers their employees, centered around helping them support a positive work-life balance. "We're regularly honored as a Best Employer for Healthy Lifestyles, with programs that can help you live a great life. They include: Tools to help you grow more resilient or connect with licensed counselors or behavioral health professionals. Health coaches who can help you with physical or emotional well being. On-site fitness centers, plus discounts on fitness classes and memberships. Innovative programs to help with better nutrition or quitting tobacco, to help you manage diabetes. We'll help you reach personal life goals, manage life events and develop fulfilling relationships."
Boeing offers a guide online providing tips for virtual interviews. "Don't worry if you're feeling a little anxious. You're not alone. If job interviews weren't already stressful, virtual interviewing which has its own nuances, whether it's family members or roommates making surprise appearances, audio delays creating awkward silences, or your dog barking at the delivery person. Many job seekers are learning how to navigate this new, virtual territory. If choosing a location, consider whether it might come with distractions such people, cars, or puppies. Remove distractions that are within your control. Find a quiet spot that's free of background noise. Pets or visitors could easily distract your interview. Also, close the window if it's noisy outside, put your phone on silent, and limit on-screen distractions that are within your control by exiting out of browsers and other applications not in use, and silence phones, tablets, and smart home devices."
HireVue offers conflicting advice, likely with the aim of separating unqualified candidates from top performers. On one page they suggest a candidate "Pick a spot free from distractions and noise." But another webpage says, "If your dog barks or kid runs across the screen, it's okay. Just relax. If your kid runs across the screen. It's okay. Your employer will understand, and if they don't, perhaps it's not the right culture fit for you. And that's okay. This is your time to showcase who you are and what you can add to an organization. Prepare, take a deep breath, and be yourself."
Remember, it is the job of the recruiter to ensure they find the right fit for their company. They've recruited HireVue to help them distinguish top performers from underperformers. How well you have prepared for your interview is the first step in showcasing you are a professional who strives to be a top performer. Ensure you are in a relatively quiet room free of distractions with as little background noise as possible. If you're not home alone, give everyone a heads-up that you are about to record your interview and ask them to be respectfully quiet. If this is not an option, wait for an opportunity to be alone. Remember, you can record your interview anytime, anywhere.
"Good time management. This alone eliminates unnecessary and easily avoidable stress. I do so by giving the priorities of my personal life and my professional life my full attention when it is appropriate to do so. I also set aside unscheduled time to tend to the mundane aspects of either sphere and set myself up for success with both. This helps me uphold my commitments, and ensures my personal life doesn't interrupt my workday while ensuring I manage my time well enough to ensure I can accomplish my work in my workday and that it never bleeds over into my personal life."
