Question 4 of 25

Why should we hire you?

"I am excited about this time in our industry. The future is now, and I am super passionate about having a hand in shaping what comes next. There's nothing I am more passionate about. So I love what I do professionally and am good at it. To me, my work doesn't feel like work. It's a thrill even on the dullest of days. So I have a strong feeling that I am the type of person who Boeing wants to contribute to this work that matters. Boeing should hire me because I am going to be building the future wherever I land, and why not build it together?"

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

This is another similarly phrased question directed at determining whether you did your homework and can deliver a strong elevator pitch as to how you are aligned with their ideal candidate. So research their website, and you'll find value propositions made to appeal to their target talent. "From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters. Want to do work that matters? Find your purpose. Join us. You can be part of a team that shapes the future of aerospace. We go further together. At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. Our innovations enable all of humanity to take flight. What does it mean to be a part of Boeing? What You Need to Know

When answering similarly phrased questions, pay attention to the details. Avoid being redundant by repeating points from previous answers. Make sure you don't contradict your previous answers, either. So you want to make sure the information you volunteer is consistent with the rest of your narrative. HireVue advertises that their assessment vendors "ensure hiring team consistency. Each candidate is asked the same questions and is reviewed using the same criteria." This includes how consistent your non-verbal cues are with what you say and whether you unintentionally contradict yourself from answer to answer or from what you've detailed on your resume.

      How to Prep

When setting up for your on-demand interview, you want to pick a good location. Boeing advises "Since you'll be speaking on camera and through a microphone, it's important to have the best sound and lighting possible. For video interviews, pick a room that has optimal lighting or sit in front of a window so there are no shadows on your face. Find the perfect spot. You want to choose a space with a good light source facing you. If the light source is behind you, you'll appear as a silhouette on the camera. Try a few different places before the interview to find the best spot."

HireVue repeats the same advice on their site as well, advising that you'll want your lighting to be cast evenly across your face. "And don't forget to check your lighting. Make sure it's in front of you. Lighting from behind makes it hard to see you." But this advice is more for their benefit than yours. The algorithm, like anything else, likely has a margin for error, if you're backlit and it's unable to read, or misinterpret your facial expressions, incorrectly categorizing you, or coming up as inconclusive, resulting in eliminating you as a candidate. So try and find a space with good natural lighting.
