Your interviewer wants to assess whether you're a good long-term fit and won't contribute to employee turnover. This question delves into your reasons for leaving your last job and why you're pursuing this one. Your response will reveal what you learned from your previous experience, your personal and professional growth, and whether you're likely to make another poor career decision.

"Actually yes, early on in my career. I had a very carefully mapped out career plan, and knew where I wanted to take my career next. But the company I worked for aggressively recruited me into a management role they felt I would excel in. And truthfully, I performed the job well and was rewarded for my merits. But, I didn't find the position fulfilling, and started to feel a bit burnt out performing work I didn't enjoy. While I did learn some new skills and experiences, the decision did hold me back a year from accomplishing the goals I'd set out for myself. So I stepped down from the management position and got my career back on track."

Openly discuss any positions that you've held that were not a fit, detailing why. Take responsibility and ownership for your decisions in pursuing, or staying in that position, and what you have learned since then. Show gratitude for what you did learn from the experience, and how you have grown as a professional as a result. One of Maersk's core values is "Our Employees. The right environment for the right people. What it means as a core value: creating a motivating, diverse and inclusive environment where our people enjoy working and having fun together." So stay focused on the positives and avoid speaking negatively about the company, your coworkers, or the experience.
