Your interviewer is curious whether you can effectively engage with their customers according to their values and customer service philosophy, and in a manner that preserves the reputation they've worked so hard to build. They are interested in learning what the message of your answer conveys about how you deal with stress, how self-managed you are in your work, and whether you are capable of handling such issues without requiring the assistance of others.

"I helped a client navigate their transportation contract, and they wanted to negotiate out of the mandatory insurance for transporting dangerous goods. They were pretty aggressive in trying to get out of the clause. So I listened and empathized with them, and validated their concerns. Ultimately, they were trying to find ways to save money but were pursuing the wrong negotiating tactic. So I went into greater depth explaining how the insurance policy was there to protect them as much as it was to protect us and then suggested maybe there were other ways we could save them money. They were intrigued, and in the end, we were able to source a few more of their needs, increase the size and duration of their contract, saving them money while securing them as a long-term client."

Maersk describes their company vision as a mindset and a promise. And, in several of their job postings, they describe their target talent as having a customer-first mindset. They describe this as being "good at forming relationships and able to understand the customer's requirement and turn these into solutions. You understand the value the customer brings to Maersk and are able to find and implement solutions that are mutually beneficial to the customer and Maersk. You are comfortable handling customer complaints and are able to defuse conflicts early. Ability to influence without authority is a must."
Additionally, one of Maersk's core values is humbleness. "Listen, learn and share to create value for others. We stay curious, open-minded and respect other perspectives, always seeking to learn from each other, our customers, and the world around us. We only succeed together."
