In doing what they say and saying what they do in all aspects of their business, accountability is one of the four primary core values at Stryker. Why this is so important is because the medical solutions they provide in products like their spinal surgery navigation tools and medical hardware devices provide a safe and effective outcome for patients in the end. Your interviewer will want to ensure that you will help live this value each and every day on the job there, so they pose this question during your interview. This is the time to discuss the importance of your word in your work and why it will be so vital to the work you will be doing for Stryker. Be sure to think about the job duties you will be performing and the people you will be working with to successfully answer this question.

"Being accountable for my words and actions was a value my parents instilled in me from a young age and something I've been proud to carry with me through my education and career to this point. For the customers I work with, accountability comes in the form of my open and honest communications with them. I live by the philosophy of under-promise and over-deliver, where so many tend to overpromise and not be able to deliver. As part of this amazing team at Stryker, the customers I will be working with will always get the best details on products and pricing so they can make the best decisions possible. This will help build a foundation of trust and respect between us as we work together for years to come."

In my current role, I am responsible for not only my position customers and my physician customers but the patients that we perform the procedure on. With such a large client base; extreme organization is key. I implement iCal calendar invites, and a daily 7 am call to coordinate all personnel in the territory. And through very open conversation, make adjustments as needed. I stay accountable by implementing and fulfilling timelines for actions. As long as I maintain this, my team falls in line. During both the day and the week, this list of action items changes with the needs of the territory.

Lauren's Feedback
Great start. You have an opportunity to provide exemplary qualities that can help you stand out as a candidate. I assisted with conveying mastery skills and superior quality of services.
I pride myself on a strong and organized work ethic. Without Time Management systems in place, I would not be successful. I take pride in my work and hold responsibility for many people in my current position, including customers, my physicians' customers, and the patients being served. I implement iCal calendar invites, and a daily 7:00 am call to coordinate all personnel in my territory. Accountability is achieved by following stringent timelines. I maintain a clear roadmap, set high expectations, and uphold exceptional service standards for my team. Lastly, I accommodate unforeseen tasks throughout the day by continuously updating my action items lists. I pay great attention to detail to juggle a large workload and its extensive client base.

In sales, I believe that I am accountable to my customers as well as my business matrix. There can be a lot of moving parts to close the business. This requires me to be organized. I have learned to set both long and short term goals and create a daily 'To Do' List where I time block my day. I have carved out specific times to answer emails and make phone calls so that I am completely focused on what has to be done.

Rachelle's Feedback
It's great that you mention accountability to both your customers and your business matrix. Your answer is full of action and examples of accountability.

I use GTD time management strategies to ensure follow-through and accountability. If I can complete a task immediately, I will. If it requires action from someone else, I will use wunderlist with a mutually agreed upon due date to ensure visibility and completion. Finally, I will use outlook to schedule events for my personal items that need to be completed. I never check off a task until it is fully completed.

Rachelle's Feedback
You sound highly organized and well prepared for a role that requires your attention in multiple directions. Fantastic response!

I always like to be as honest and upfront as possible with customers. I let them know beforehand if there are any potential obstacles and give a "worst-case scenario" timeline so that I can definitively meet or exceed their expectations. I keep a long to-do list on my phone and an extremely detailed calendar to ensure I am on task.

Rachelle's Feedback
I would love to know more about how you arrange your extremely detailed calendar - this may be a follow-up question from your interviewer. Good response overall!

The ways I ensure accountability is by writing daily, weekly, and monthly to-do lists and to check each off as I go along, so I never miss anything. Also, having all correspondence with customers or fellow employees documented via email; if anything was to go wrong, there is documentation of what happened and what was said.

I utilize a few different options that I have available to me to ensure tasks are getting completed. I use my calendar in my email to ensure meetings are kept track of and long term projects by setting myself reminders. I also use a white erase board at my desk to keep track of items that I am currently working on an can remove once they are completed. Lastly, I use Salesforce to assign tasks to my team members so that it is tracked and reminders can be set as well.

Rachelle's Feedback
You seem highly organized and accountable for your work. The details you add are very helpful!
Anonymous Answer
I take my word very seriously and feel enormous responsibility for my commitments. My accountability is reliant on my ability to stay organized in my work and to stay on top of my tasks for my customers. I am a written lists person and I utilize a written task list. Once or twice per week, I re-prioritize the list to work on urgent needs first and I also stay in communication with my customers if deadlines need to move.
