It is no secret that healthcare administrators and leaders are relied upon to be agents of change. As they consider candidates to join their Administrative Fellowship program, your interviewers want to be assured that the candidate they bring aboard won't hesitate to take initiative in making process improvements. This question gives you the opportunity to talk about a time when you didn't hesitate to be an agent for change.

"As the president of my university's chapter of PBL during my undergraduate program, I took the lead in developing a code of conduct for our campus members. In my initial years with the club, I was saddened to see a lack of participation by members who were just enrolling to boost their resumes. I felt it was important to increase participation in the chapter and ran for president my senior year. I put together a team of four people to develop the code of conduct and it was implemented for the new enrollment year and continues to this day."

Prior to your Administrative Fellowship interview, think back to a time when you took the lead in improving processes or procedures for a group. Your example can come from your educational path or from a prior work experience. Your example should clearly outline how you discovered the need for improvement and the steps you took to initiate the change.

In my current job, we must contact medical providers and explain a patient's insurance. We have an open-access plan that does not have a network. My colleagues struggled with explaining the insurance, so I took it upon myself to outline the language and communication style. After presenting my input, our caseload for this particular insurance significantly decreased.
