2. How will you handle the day-to-day stress that will come during your Administrative Fellowship training?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
As you look to dive into Administrative Fellowship training, it is important to note that no two days will be the same and you will be juggling multiple tasks and priorities at once. Your interviewers know that this can be very stressful work and that only the strongest candidates will be able to handle this with ease. In asking this question, your interviewers are looking to hear your plan for handling the day-to-day stresses that come with being an Administrative Fellow.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 19th, 2022
How to Answer
There are a few ways to attack answering this question if it comes up during your Administrative Fellowship interview. First, you'll want to talk about tips and tricks you use in your work to stay organized and on track with deadlines. Don't hesitate to talk about how you would block your calendar for email follow-up and keep long-term goals on pace. You can also discuss personal tactics you use to combat workplace stress and maybe these can be techniques you used during your college years. As well, don't hesitate to discuss things you do outside of the workplace to help ensure that your body and mind are prepared to handle anything thrown at you the next day on the job.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 19th, 2022
Answer Example
"I handle stress very well, and when you call my references, they will attest to this fact. When I am under pressure on the job, I focus on the task at hand and make sure not to get distracted. Staying on a deadline is very helpful and I do this by keeping detailed notes on my projects and always blocking my calendar to handle project work and day-to-day work that comes up. Finding a balance in this is key. If I ever become stressed in the moment, I take time to step away and gather my thoughts on how to attack a situation."

5. As a fellow with our program, how will you react when you are asked to perform a function or complete a task in which you had little or no experience in doing?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
With any candidate they consider to join their institution as an Administrative Fellow, your team of interviewers is fully aware that any candidate they bring aboard will be wet behind the ears in some areas of their training program. As a fellow, they'll be looking to hear that you are ready to dive in, make some mistakes and ask questions along the way.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 19th, 2022
How to Answer
Think back to your graduate program and talk about jumping into an area of your coursework, project work, or capstone project that was unfamiliar to you. You'll want to highlight your ability to discuss details with your colleagues and mentors while also formulating your own ideas for jumping into the work. Make sure to stress that while there are some areas you won't be an expert in during your time as an Administrative Fellow with this program, you are ready and willing to take on new roles, make mistakes, learn and grow during your time training.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 19th, 2022
Answer Example
"I'm confident that you won't' talk to another candidate that is more ready and eager to come to your Administrative Fellowship and learn new things. I know that things like research administration and public affairs are a little unfamiliar to me, but I'm ready to join your institution with an open mind that is ready to learn and grow. I will always ask a lot of questions and then jump into my work. A great example of this was my capstone project in my MHA program. I studied the local impacts of drug prices on the elderly population. One area that I had very little experience in was the pharmaceutical side. I scheduled time to have in-depth conversations with two pharmacists to better understand costs and insurance coverages prior to beginning my research."

9. How would you handle working closely with someone who was a poor communicator?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
During your time training as an Administrative Fellow, you will be working with high-level administrators, providers, and other leaders throughout the institution. Your interviewers need to be assured that you will come to their program with the ability to work effectively with any poor communicators you will inevitably encounter.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 19th, 2022
How to Answer
Essentially, you want to reiterate to your interviewers that you would always remain professional, calm, and focused on your work despite any communication breakdowns with a colleague. Try to emphasize that you will take a professional and direct approach with someone who wasn't communicating as needed and that you would work to establish timelines and/or expectations with them that work on both ends. If you have a direct example of a time when you successfully navigated working with a poor communicator, now would be a great time to highlight that experience.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 19th, 2022

"If I was working closely with someone here who was not a great communicator as a fellow here, I would ask them how they wanted me to communicate with them. Just because their communication style does not match mine, it does not make it wrong. I can certainly learn to work with their style so long as it remains professional and respectful. I know that many leaders and providers I'll be working closely with have very busy schedules and I would come here willing and ready to work around everyone's schedules as needed."

Prior to your interview, think about any types of volunteer activities or required work activities you have been a part of in the past, and come to your interview prepared to discuss that activity and what you got out of it. Then, speak from the heart as you talk about some of the reasons why engaging in community activities is so important to any institution and why it's important to you. Whether you discuss providing education to students on personal hygiene or educating the public on diabetes awareness, make sure you speak with passion in your answer.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 19th, 2022
Answer Example
"Promoting healthy lifestyle changes and awareness around lesser known diseases is something that I am passionate about. For large healthcare organizations like yours, engaging with communities on these issues is important to help raise general awareness and help make overall improvements to the health and wellness of all. This in turn helps drive down costs and access for patients. Last year, I had the opportunity to volunteer for creating and presenting to local high school students the dangers of tobacco usage, particularly as it relates to the increased usage of vaping products in schools. Providing this education was very satisfying as I was able to connect one-on-one with many students and hopefully help change some lives!"

"During my master's program, I ran into a few issues working over the summer in my clerkship. It was a great experience working for an inner-city clinic that had a wide variety of patients and one of the tasks I was assigned was creating and distributing a patient survey. While the creation was fairly easy given my skills, the clinic didn't have email contact information for a lot of patients and they didn't have an online portal as other major healthcare institutions had. To gather as much patient information as possible, I worked with the scheduling staff to start collecting the email addresses of patients that were calling and scheduling appointments moving forward for those we didn't have. Outside of our schedulers, I worked to have a mailer sent out to other patients with a response sheet and a stamped envelope to return. After just two months, we had addresses for over 80% of our patients, and surveys were sent out at the end of my clerkship."
