Your answer to this question will help the interviewer assess how adaptable you'll be to their way of doing things and how flexible you'll be in varying your tasks as needed. It may also tell them whether you are innovative and strive to go the extra mile or prefer more predictable work and consistently strive to meet the status quo. Most organizations prefer to hire candidates who show potential for creative outside-of-the-box thinking while adhering to the company's protocol and guidelines.

"In the workplace, I naturally lean towards my preference of straightforward rules and expectations. From there, once I am comfortable with my knowledge base, I can start to think outside of the box. So, to answer your question, I would say I bring a healthy balance of both."

Fantastic answer!
I am a creative thinker who is resourceful and can think on their toes while applying protocols and guidelines.

I think being a creative thinker is important but not until I am well adjusted into the role knowing the predetermined rules first. I once identified part of the script used in obtaining verbal authorizations was slowing the team down in some areas. I got permission to adjust the script and was able to save time which allowed us to spend that time obtaining more authorizations.

While many people wouldn't necessarily consider insurance a creative industry, being a creative thinker also means being an effective problem solver. You do a good job in your answer of hedging your bets - you acknowledge the importance of thinking creatively while also stating that you will first abide by the predetermined rules. You might consider talking more about how creative thinking can lead to innovative solutions for clients.

As far as work goes I prefer straightforward rules.. as a mortgage loan processor there was no gray area. There were a set of rules and regulations that had to be followed. I do tend to be more creative when talking to clients and problem-solving.. with ______ my job allowed more creative work with customers BUT within their marketing guidelines.
Marcie's Feedback
Excellent. You've struck a nice balance here - indicating that you like both and can work either way. Including examples supports your assertions. Great job!
