To effectively answer this question, highlight the skills a highly functional communicator possesses. Emphasize your non-defensive communication skills, like being a proficient active listener, and exemplify your ability to mirror, validate, and empathize. Extra points if you can adapt your communication style to that of others, especially where others are less skilled and less adaptable. Then, to rate yourself, contrast your skill level against yourself five years ago.

"I will rate myself an 8/10 because I value communication, but, like most people, I have things to learn. I ensure clear communication by utilizing multiple methods of delivering messages and give ample time for questions before implementing changes."

I'd rate myself an 8. My communication is clear but there are always new things to learn.
I'm asked on a daily basis by clients to explain the share of cost policies. I've learned effective communications courses to use active listening to ensure the client knows they are heard. Clients always thank me for taking the time to make sure they understand complex parts of the policy.

This is a strong answer. When rating your communication skills, you potentially can go into verbal communication (presentations and meetings), written communication (reports), body language, and listening. Lots of different things go into being an excellent communicator. Make sure to highlight all of the areas in which you excel. Your example is helpful in terms of showing how well you're able to convey difficult concepts to others.

I would rate myself an 8 out of 10. There is always room to improve. While working in mortgage services it was imperative I explained closing documents as concisely and clearly as possible: otherwise, I was not doing my job.. whether it was a first-time homebuyer or a seasoned homeowner the need to be clear with communication was key.

Great! This is a strong answer and rating yourself as an 8 is perfect (it shows you think highly of your communication skills but recognize there's still room to improve). Including an example is also helpful. Don't forget to mention the various types of communication and how well you do with each: listening, verbal, non-verbal, written, presenting, etc. Nice job!
