To many employers, the number of years of experience is flexible - so long as you have the results to show for the years that you have. When discussing your qualifications for the position, focus on your relevant skills and accomplishments rather than solely on your years of experience. You can also highlight any transferable skills or knowledge that may apply to the position. Additionally, express your eagerness to learn and grow in the role and emphasize your passion for the industry. With a positive and confident attitude, you can showcase your potential as a valuable asset to the team.
And whatever you do, make no apologies for your lack of years, as they invited you to the interview knowing you have less experience than preferred.

"Although I have five years vs. eight years' experience, I can do this job well. In my previous role, I outperformed colleagues with 12 years of experience. To me, it's all about drive and the ability to be a quick study. I have all of these qualities and more."

"I may not have the desired years of experience; however, my experience does match all of your must-haves for this role. In addition to this, I have a Master's Degree in Psychology, which accounts for a lot. I am confident in my ability to do this job well, and I assure you will not be disappointed if you hire me for the position."

"Along with my five years working in this industry, I have worked in related industries my entire career. Also, I hope that my master's degree gives me a little boost in experience over the required undergraduate degree."

I was identified for the part-time advising position I hold now based on my interactions with students when I worked at the New Student Orientations. Since then I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge at this institution which I can apply strategically to analyze a student's situation. My work for many years has been relational and teaching including behavioral coaching.
