Question 15 of 35

How often do you monitor the progress of the students on your academic roster?

"I believe in regular progress monitoring with all students. It's important that they know I care about their progress and achievements. Regular check-ins can help identify potential issues early on and allow for timely intervention. I know monitoring my student's progress at least once a semester is recommended, but more frequent check-ins may be necessary for students who are struggling or facing challenges. Ultimately, my goal is to provide the support and guidance needed to help each student reach their full potential."

      What You Need to Know

The interviewer wants to better understand your level of engagement with the students on your academic roster. They want to see if you are more hands-off and wait for the students to approach you. Or, perhaps, you are the type to take a proactive approach and make a note to connect with your students regularly. Discuss how you ensure your level of engagement with your students is high.

      Answer Example

"I understand that most educational facilities recommend that students connect with their academic advisor at least three times per semester. That's great for the students who are excelling; however, I prefer to have a better pulse on the students who are struggling a bit. This year I started using engagement software with the students on my roster. This software, called 15Five, elevates my students' engagement by asking questions and starting the right conversations bi-weekly. The student logs on, rates how they feel from 1 to 5, and then answers a brief question that I have pre-loaded into the form. If a student is feeling a 2 out of 5, this is an indicator that I need to check in more frequently."

      Experienced Example

"All the time! Maybe they get tired of me always checking in on them, but my active involvement in their lives has shown positive results. As an academic advisor, it's important for me to check in on my students regularly. It's not just about ensuring they're on track academically, but also about building a relationship of trust and support. By staying in touch with my students, I can provide guidance and resources as needed and help them navigate any challenges they may be facing. Additionally, checking in on my students often shows that I care about their success and well-being, which can motivate them to stay committed to their studies. Ultimately, my goal as an advisor is to help my students achieve their goals and reach their full potential, and checking in on them regularly is an important part of that process."
