The interviewer wants to be assured that you fully understand the scope of this position. If you are not sure of the essential functions of this role, go back to the job posting or job description. These will be clearly outlined in those documents. See what they continually mention in the job posting and if there is a standard theme. Talk about those job responsibilities and tie in the fact that you are experienced and talented in those areas.
Some examples of your responsibilities include providing guidance and support to students throughout their academic journey, monitoring their progress, and helping them stay on track to meet their educational goals. You could also mention how you connect students with resources such as academic support services, career services, and extracurricular activities. Additionally, your role is to provide advice on internships, study abroad programs, and other opportunities that can enhance their academic experience.

"I believe that the three primary functions of an academic advisor are to help students recognize what they need to achieve, give them the tools they need to reach those goals, and help them critically look at their post-secondary educational path. I see in your job posting that you also greatly value those skills. I am highly competent in these functions and feel that my Master's Degree in Educational Counseling makes me the best fit for your needs."

"In my opinion, the top three functions and responsibilities of an academic advisor include a strong concern for student success, the talent to build rapport very quickly, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. There are many other functions of an academic advisor, but I believe those are the top three to be successful in this job."

"From my experience, an academic advisor needs to be a strong source of guidance, able to offer well-researched advice, and be a strong accountability partner. Are these the qualities you seek from your next academic advisor?"

A careers adviser must have excellent interpersonal skills to help create a suitably, relaxed environment for students to reflect on their career options. They must also be very organized and have excellent presentation skills. Career advisers must help students understand their skills and interests, what options are and pathways are available to them, and how to reach their career goals. My master's in career guidance has prepared me to support students in this way.

Academic Advisors are cultural navigators providing a bridge to college. We use our interpersonal and relational/communication skills along with our knowledge of human development and education to welcome each individual, and learn what is alive and important to that student. We combine all of this with our wealth of knowledge about this institution---majors, programs, instructors, co-curricular, clubs, rules, grades, and learning and support services to advise each student.
Marcie's Feedback
So the top three functions of an academic advisor, in your opinion, are being a cultural navigator, welcoming and understanding each student, and advising them about the school and what it has to offer? Nice! What exactly do you mean by the term cultural navigator? Can you explain that more, possibly even including an example? You do a great job of pointing out the skills needed to succeed in this profession (which reminds the interviewer that you possess them). Excellent answer!
