It's impossible to know where you will be in five years. However, explore your intentions and what you would like to work towards with this question. Before the interview, conduct deep research into the company and its available positions. If there are positions in the company that appeal to you yet you are not yet qualified for, integrate these into your revised five-year career plan. Explore the different directions you'd like to take your career with them should they grant you the opportunity. This way, you'll be more than prepared should this question present itself, and would clearly exhibit you are interested in long-term employment with them.

Ideally, in 5 years, I would like to see myself as a key role player within the maintenance department achieving KPIs to an agreeable higher standard.

Rachelle's Feedback
This is a great goal that BHP Billiton could get behind! What steps do you plan to take to achieve this in the next five years?

Well, if I'm being honest, I had originally applied for the manager's role for this position. Having said that, I would say that it was probably a stretch for me at this point in my career but I think that speaks to where I'd like to be five years from now. I'd like to be in a position of increasing responsibility for handling the most complex challenges that the company of the business unit is facing.
Marcie's Feedback
Nice! The fact that you previously applied to the manager's role does speak to your ambitions. Can you talk more about why you want to manage others one day? Do you have leadership skills or a desire to lead?
