There is an old adage that says true character is what you do when no one is around. We have a good relationship with this customer. We agreed to do the assessment and found that their burner was working adequately and that some minor changes to instrumentation and controls could eliminate the need for a new burner system. The cost of a burner system is nearly ¾ of a million dollars on multiple units so there is some benefit in us taking this work on compared to the small changes they required. The chief steam engineer asked us to “get creative” with the data to help move the project forward.
In the end, we refused to quote the new burner system as the costs couldn’t be justified. They will likely find someone to do the work for them but they will never recoup the costs of doing that project to justify the expenses and there is a good chance there will be some hard questions to answer. I believe that we’ll be better served to foster long-term relationships with the customer rather than chasing short-term wins."
