Not everyone has a mission statement or personal mantra just off the cuff. Therefore, when preparing for interviews and readying yourself for entering the job market, you'll want to prepare more than your cover letter and interview. It's important to compose a brief bio that goes beyond what you've detailed in your cover letter. It is of equal importance to update your five-year career plan and goals. Additionally, you'll want to update your professional mission statement and core values. This will help you more tangibly align your values, goals, and mission statement with the companies you feel have a culture and environment that is a good match. Having this laid out in advance will help you convince your interviewers you've put genuine thought into their opportunities, thereby making you a more desirable candidate.

"My mantra is that 'people who shine from within do not need the spotlight.' I feel that it is incredibly important to be a humble leader and I take this mission statement very seriously. I want my team to be in the spotlight rather than being the kind of leader that takes credit for good work."

"I am not sure that I have a personal mission statement; however, my mission is to always treat people with respect and kindness. Kindness will always win, and people appreciate the gesture."

I really value fairness and equality and that giving people equitable opportunities to excel will result in a better world for everyone. I think that I can make the biggest impact on the world improving efficiencies in the commodity space to enable more people to access more resources. If I had a personal mission statement it would be "make the world a better place by making processes more efficient."

Great! Your mission statement is a good one because it shows who you are as a person - someone who values equality and wants to help others. Any interviewer will be impressed. Good job!
