Broadening the extent of your research beyond BHP means including their competitors, any recent media or news coverage, what's happening in the industry, and relevant information about yourself to frame yourself as a good fit for the opportunity. This question aims to reveal your level of interest in working for them, and where they rank among the other companies you are interviewing with. By testing the limits you've gone to research this opportunity, the company, and its culture, they'll better be able to determine how badly you want to work for them over their competitors. It will also inform them of your work ethic and what they can expect from you as an employee.
"I have researched BHP Billiton plc and see that you truly are an industry leader in the metals and mining arena. From my research, I believe what sets you apart is your incredible dedication to safety and to the environment."
"From my understanding, your biggest competitors are companies A, B, and C. I believe that BHP Billiton plc is different because you put safety above all else. Your public safety records are impressive, and I am excited at the possibility of joining such a responsible company."

Rio Tinto, Anglo American, and Fortescue are the biggest competitors. I think the clear dedication to your charter values sets you apart from competitors. When I see things like 3 and a half years without a loss of life incident and 46% electricity sourced from renewable sources and including royalty payments in your annual report as a stat to be proud of I think it points to a dedication to your charter that distinguishes you from others and I’d have to think that things like performance and other charters would be no exception.

It's great that you can rattle off the top competitors like that. Perfect. Also, the stats and charter values you mention show how much research you've done on the company compared to its competitors. Nicely done!
