If a patient is reluctant, the music therapist can try a different approach or enlist family members to participate, which might make the patient want to join in. The interviewer wants to hear how you work with patients who are reluctant to participate in music therapy to see your approach and working style.

"When I have a patient that is reluctant to participate, and they are verbal, I ask them why they do not want music therapy. Based on their answer, I will adjust my approach. If a patient is nonverbal, I will ask family members or caregivers to join in, which sometimes helps the patient see that music therapy is enjoyable. I never force a patient to participate and respect their wishes if they do not want me to perform music therapy."
