There are various techniques for music therapy, such as drumming, singing familiar songs, listening to live or recorded music, playing instruments, and writing and composing songs. The interviewer wants to hear that you utilize various techniques and wants to see what you have found to be the most effective. Consider the types of patients the organization treats, and tailor your answer to fit the needs of the patient demographic.

"I use a variety of music therapy techniques. I consider what type of patient I am treating and their individual needs and then design therapy sessions using techniques I feel would be best for them. I feel that the most effective technique is when I play my patient's favorite music on my guitar or piano and invite them to play along while either drumming or playing hand percussion."
