When it comes to using your listening skills while receiving direction from your employer, asking for clarification can save you a lot of grief down the road! Show that you are one to check for full understanding when you are navigating new territory. I had just reread the _____ book on coaching literally the weekend before. The following week, I had to speak to a student that I see on a regular basis regarding his choices in the classroom. This student is usually combative with me when working through the situation, oftentimes leading me frustrated and no change made. This time, I implemented the strategies reviewed in the book: seeking to understand before being understood. This involved me being quiet as the student talked and not trying to solve the problem, but supporting the student to find their own solution. In the end, he was able to calmly explain to his teacher his choices and how she could better support him when he is feeling frustrated.
