Many hiring managers will choose one candidate over another because of their volunteer experience. They feel that it shows strong character and selflessness - all qualities that make a great employee. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to give back to your community in some form of volunteerism. If you do not have formal volunteer experience, you can draw on things you do in your spare time to assist friends, family, or even your current employer.

"For the past eight months, I have volunteered every Wednesday evening at our local animal shelter. I help groom, feed, and walk the animals. It's been an enjoyable experience and rewarding at the same time."

"I have not formally volunteered in recent years. However, I spend a lot of time helping my sister, who is a single mom. I babysit on weekends, cook dinners for her, and drive the kids to appointments when necessary. I feel that it is essential to take care of the family's needs."

Over the past few years when I am not working I am helping my grandparents with their business. They are dedicated, hard workers from whom I like to believe I have learned a lot over the years. They are both in their late 70s and were still running their own business up until this year. Whether it be going to run the shop for them so they could have a day off or preparing meals. I am so thankful for the time I was able to spend with them.

When I worked for ________ we helped build a park in Moreno Valley. It was a great experience to see the different diversity come together as a team, have fun, and be able to help the community.
Marcie's Feedback
Nice! Can you talk more about why this group decided to build a park? Was this in an underserved community? What exactly was your role during this outing? Did the community appreciate the group's efforts? Use the STAR method to describe the situation, your task/actions, and the result. Good job!
