16. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
While it can be challenging to work as a detective, it is crucial to maintain a healthy work-life balance for both mental and physical well-being. Working long hours and dealing with the stress of investigating cases can take a toll on the body and mind. To prevent burnout, it is essential to have leisure time and engage in activities outside of work.
Setting boundaries and creating a schedule that allows for both work and leisure time is one way to maintain a healthy work-life balance. This can include scheduling time for exercise, hobbies, and spending time with family and friends. Prioritizing self-care, such as getting enough sleep and eating well, is also essential.
Ultimately, achieving a healthy work-life balance as a detective requires a conscious effort to prioritize self-care and create a balanced lifestyle. By doing so, you can improve your overall well-being and be better equipped to handle the challenges of your job, which the interviewer understands. Let them know how you maintain your work-life balance in the field of law enforcement.

Answer Example
"That's a great question! It is definitely a challenge in this line of work, but it is doable. Knowing that I cannot count on a set schedule to work out or spend time with my family, I take advantage of doing so any chance I get. I make sure I get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, eat well, and practice relaxation techniques I learned from my wife. That way, I can perform well at my job and have enough energy after work to spend quality time with my wife and kids. I also use my holiday time to go on vacation with my family and leave work behind as much as possible. But, you will find, I spend plenty of time away from work poring over cases, so there is a fine line."
