As a detective, you'll frequently encounter challenging and emotionally charged situations, so it's essential that you remain calm and make sound decisions under stress. The interviewer asks this question to gauge your ability to handle stress and determine if you're a good fit for the position. Assure them that you can handle this stress and pressure gracefully and professionally, providing an example or two to back up your response.

"I am trained to withstand high amounts of stress and pressure on the job. Law enforcement is inherently stressful. Every response call can be a matter of life and death and full of adrenaline inducing scenarios. It is important to be prepared in order to protect others' lives as well as your own. As an officer, I have dealt with angry and violent suspects and worked with them to diffuse the situation. I manage stressful cases by breaking them into smaller, more manageable issues and scenarios. From there, I find the situations become less overwhelming and easier to manage."
