As a Dermatology resident with our program, how will you build trust with your patients?
The physician-patient relationship is forged in trust, and given the highly sensitive nature of Dermatology as a medical specialty, Dermatologists need to be one of the most trusting subspecialists in medicine. Your residency interviewers want new residents who can build rapport quickly with their patients to ensure the best overall care possible is achieved.
Put some serious thought into a question like this before your Dermatology residency interviews. Come prepared to discuss how you plan to be a resident that can quickly build trust with your patients. Some great things to discuss would be your ability to educate patients promptly, give them your undivided attention, put yourself in their shoes (empathizing), and be an open communicator to your patients at all times.
"Trust with patients comes down to respect, empathy, and communication, and I exemplify each of these qualities in my work. As a Dermatology resident, I firmly believe that understanding the social determinants of health is also a big factor in building trust because knowing and understanding each patient's barriers to medical care can encourage them to trust me."
"I feel that trust is very important between patients and their providers. I hope to build trust with my patients by being non-judgmental and remaining empathic when treating patients going through difficult illness. I also hope that by building longitudinal relationships with my patients and seeing them over the course of months to years so that I can continue to build rapport and trust with them."
