1. We run a variety of shifts at XPO Logistics since our business is a 24/7 operation. Do you have a preferred shift?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer wants to know what kind of flexibility you can offer XPO Logistics when it comes to your work schedule. Perform thorough research on the company and on the position before your interview. The last thing you want is to come across as unprepared by not having a clear understanding of what the job looks like that you are interviewing for. Also, asking questions that you should already know the answer to will come across as being the type of employee who puts in the bare minimum in their work. However, if you did perform your research and no information was readily found, then feel free to state that and ask a clarifying question. If you have any restrictions on your calendar, this is an excellent time to address them. If there is a specific shift that you are looking for, be upfront about your preference.

4. XPO Logistics tries to be competitive in the marketplace but some roles do not pay as well as our competitors. Is compensation the most important factor for you when taking a new job?
What You Need to Know
It is important to pay close attention to how this question is phrased. They are not saying that they won't be able to pay you a fair wage. They've said some positions cannot pay as well as their competitors. The aim of this question is to assess what value you place on pay over other motivating factors for a fulfilling career. By offering your interviewer the other factors that are important to you when considering a new job, you could advertise your greater worth to the company. At the same time, it is important to not sell yourself short. Pay holds value for everyone. So best to neither advertise nor dismiss this point when answering this question. Simply focus on the other motivators aside from pay, and emphasizing that pay isn't the only thing that matters.

6. What is your definition of hard work?
What You Need to Know
Hard work and dedication can be interpreted differently by everyone. To one person, another person's hard work could seem like slacking. But this question goes farther than what your work standard says about you. It also touches on the same points as working harder versus working smarter. Talk to the interviewer about how you interpret a hard day's work. Someone who has more of a strategic approach to their work, working smarter, might have less of a need to work hard. Hard work could equate to an employee putting in long and taxing payroll hours. Working smart exemplifies your ability to prioritize, organize, and effectively managing your time and strategizing how to complete a project or any given task well within a given timeframe. Often when working smarter, the payroll hours you'd otherwise put in are cut in half, lightening your work load, contributing to effective time management, all while protecting your company's assets.

7. What types of activities keep you busy, outside of work?
What You Need to Know
Having hobbies and interests outside of work is a vital part of maintaining a healthy work/life balance. However, carefully consider what you choose to share. Choosing hobbies that align with your career pursuits can advertise you as a career focussed individual who is motivated by what they do. Yet sharing that you are the lead singer in a band that performs every night of the week and has a raging back stage party after every show could raise a red flag on where your priorities lie and could present a career/hobby conflict. Also, try to excite memorable conversation when answering this question. The more professionally memorable you are, the more likely you'll be invited back for another interview.

"I have been able to present cost-cutting suggestions many times to my previous employer. The one that I feel had the biggest impact was when I suggested additional warehouse staff. We had three various shifts and still an average of 100 hours of overtime per week. I presented to my employer that we hire one more warehouse employee for each shift, keeping the hours to just 120 regular vs. 100 hours of overtime pay (@1.5x) This recommendation saved the company $31,000 per year. They implemented this change across 15 warehouses the following year, amounting to nearly half a million dollars in savings per year."
2nd Answer Example
"The greatest cost-cutting measurement that I accomplished at work was through new suggestions for theft prevention. Since we implemented some of my suggestions our loss, due to theft, has decreased 12%."

Leadership
29. How do you like to encourage ideas from others?
What You Need to Know
Throughout the interview process, the interviewer will give you opportunities to advertise your transferable skills. Providing examples where you identified an employee's growth potential is the aim here. Share how approached their training, and how their performance improved as a result of your efforts. Describe how they continued to excel after your mentoring. If they regressed, offer what you did to contribute further to their development. The tone you want to strike is humility, competence, and you are consistently going above and beyond.

1st Answer Example
"I like to encourage other people to be creative in their thinking and present ideas to the company, no matter how off the wall they may seem. Some of our most successful employees are ones who are confident in their ability to bring forward their unique ideas. I encourage participation through an open door policy and strong praise for those who show initiative."
2nd Answer Example
"I encourage people to tap into the best parts of themselves. It helps to ask probing questions to get them to generate ideas on their own. I have found that by painting a long-term vision for where I want to go, my team will often jump in with creative solutions to get us there."
Trust
30. At XPO Logistics, we value and reward honesty. On a scale from 1 to 10, how honest are you?
What You Need to Know
Choose your words carefully. This is a tricky question, as no one is 100% honest, even when they try. Emphasize the importance of being able to wholly trust the other members of your team. Offer that you see great value in transparency, while consistently respecting the chain of command. Express that you try to be as honest with yourself as often as possible, especially when confronted with emotionally confusing situations. Then touch on your emotional stability, and that you don't let your emotions govern your behavior.

2nd Answer Example
"I put a heavy focus on honesty and trustworthiness in the workplace, as well as in my personal life. Because I strive for complete honesty, I will rate myself as a 10/10. My values are solid."

2nd Answer Example
"If I caught a co-worker stealing, I would report the incident immediately. As a previous manager, I understand the value of employee honesty."
