Question 20 of 30

Describe a time when you disliked company rules in a previous job.

"I'm a major rule-follower -- I hate the feeling of knowing I broke a rule, especially if it affects my team! The only rule that's bothered me at work was about not keeping lunch boxes/totes in the fridge. I know the point was to save space, but everyone always ended up having to line up at the fridge at lunch time, so we missed out on enjoying our meals together. But at the end of the day, it's not so bad to wait a few extra minutes -- and everyone got some time to enjoy time together while we waited."

  • 20. Describe a time when you disliked company rules in a previous job.

      How to Answer

Organizations have rules for a reason, and Target is no exception. The health of a team depends on everyone's willingness to follow the rules. Be sure to let the interviewer know that you always follow the rules, even when you don't necessarily agree with them. Think of a unique example of a rule you had to follow at a previous job and describe why you disagreed with it -- but make sure you make it clear that you always followed the rule.

      2nd Answer Example

"In college, I had an internship at a company that had a strict rule against interoffice dating relationships. I had a friend there who was really interested in one of our coworkers, and it was clear that the feeling was mutual. I felt really frustrated about the rule for them because I wanted them both to be happy -- but I also knew that the rule was there for a reason and that a relationship could cause serious problems for the rest of the team, so I encouraged my friend to be patient and follow the rules."
