Home Bargains Interview Questions

  1. 1.

Personality fit is important to us at Home Bargains. How would you describe your personality?

At Home Bargains, no two days are ever alike thanks to the fast-paced nature of our business. If you're looking for an active, energetic, fun job, then Home Bargains is the place for you. Talk to the interviewer about one or two of your personality traits and describe how these traits make you a great fit for the team at Home Bargains.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I would definitely describe myself as energetic. I enjoy being active, so I'm excited about a job that gets me up on my feet and moving around a lot. I feel very energized by being around other people because I'm such an extrovert -- I never get tired of talking to new people and learning about them."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm a really eager and enthusiastic worker. It honestly doesn't matter what task I'm working on; if I'm in the right environment, I can have fun and enjoy the work no matter what it is. I'm definitely a focused, efficient worker, but that doesn't stop me from having fun while I'm on the job. I always look for opportunities to bring light into other people's days."

  2. 2.

Describe to me your ideal employer.

There's a lot to love about working for a company like Home Bargains: from our company-run parties and family fun days, to our commitment to acting fairly and ethically in our communities and in the world, we're doing our part to make our company culture and our world better every day. What qualities do you look for in a company? What kind of company gets your attention?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I need to know that I'm working for a company that values human life and the planet -- and that puts those values into action. I love that they have a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, modern slavery, and human trafficking of any kind within their operations and supply chain. That's the kind of company I feel good working for."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"My ideal employer prioritizes equality and respect by fostering a spirit of collaboration and teamwork, which is why I'm so excited about the possibility of working for Home Bargains. I love the idea of family fun days, where the company can get together with their families and everyone can get to know each other better. I think that a company is most successful when its employees are happy, treated with respect, and feel like real contributors to a team effort."

  3. 3.

What do you think sets Home Bargains apart from its competitors?

At Home Bargains, our passion is making quality home, beauty, health, and food products accessible to every UK family, regardless of economic level. We keep our prices low -- so low, in fact, that our competitors have a hard time matching our prices! What do you think makes Home Bargains different? How do you think their approach has contributed to their rapid growth?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I think any company that truly puts its customers' needs first -- not just in word, but in action -- is already a step ahead of their competitors. From what I've seen as a shopper at Home Bargains, customer satisfaction is truly a guarantee. I've talked to some of your employees, and they all agree that this is a great place to work and they feel like they're really a part of a team, and several of them pointed out that they think that the success of their store is really dependent on the teamwork and positive atmosphere. That's what I think really makes Home Bargains stand out from the rest of the industry."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I did a little research into the open-buying policy, and it seems like that's Home Bargains' secret weapon. It keeps their suppliers happy because they offer such competitive reimbursement plans and can accept such large quantities of product; and it keeps their customers happy because the prices are truly as low as they can get!"

  4. 4.

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm really cool-headed and even-tempered, so I don't panic when something unexpected happens on the way to work. I had a flat tire a few months ago when I was driving into the store where I work now -- nothing could have prevented it, and no one was at fault. My first call was to my manager, explaining the situation but that I would be there as quickly as I could, and then I got to work changing the tire. I made it to the store about fifteen minutes late, made my apologies, and everything was fine."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I always give myself an extra time-buffer when I leave for work just in case something catches me by surprise. That way, I'm not stressed out if something happens because I've already prepared for it in advance."

  5. 5.

How can Home Bargains motivate you on the job?

We believe that as Home Bargains continues to grow, our employees should have opportunities to grow, too. Our rapid expansion over the last few years means that we are better equipped than ever before to invest in our employees and motivate them to do their best work. How can Home Bargains motivate you at work?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I feel most motivated when I'm working for a company and on a team that really values my unique contributions and treats me like a human being instead of just a means to an end. I like that Home Bargains has company-wide policies to encourage and develop their employees at every level of the organization. Any effort that my managers make to show me that they appreciate my work is enough to motivate me to do my best."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are noticed. In my current position, we have a leaderboard and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition for me as well."

  6. 6.

We have a strong employee honesty program in place at Home Bargains to prevent loss. What would you do if you discovered that a co-worker was stealing product or money?

We're looking for reliable, honest sales workers here at Home Bargains, so we expect that every employee acts with integrity and has strong character. Talk to the interviewer about how you would respond if a coworker was stealing products or cash from the store.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I value honesty so if I saw a co-worker stealing; I would tell my manager immediately. Do you have a process in place for reporting these types of situations?"

  7. 7.

Tell me 3 qualities you possess that make you a strong fit for this position with Home Bargains.

At Home Bargains, our sales assistants are among the most well-rounded in the industry: they merchandise, replenish stock, operate the tills, and so much more. You'll have countless opportunities to showcase your abilities and shine on our team. Talk to the interviewer about what you think makes you a strong fit for the Home Bargains family.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"If I had to choose three words to describe myself, I would say Collaborative, Independent, and Adaptable. I do my best work when I'm on a team of like-minded individuals; while some may say that collaboration and independence don't work together, I think they definitely do! I like to brainstorm ideas, divide tasks up to accomplish goals as a team, but I also do my best work independently because I like to set my own goals throughout the day. I'm also very adaptable to different environment and find it easy to pick up the pace without feeling overwhelmed if things get especially busy at work."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm a very diligent, efficient worker. I like to find the best way to accomplish a task, and you can count on me to find the fastest way to meet a goal. I'm also very reliable and have never been late to work, outside of unforeseeable circumstances. I really love to have fun at work, too, so I always bring a fun, positive spirit to my environment. I think that happy people do better work."

  8. 8.

Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is rude towards you or a co-worker?

Our customer-centric business model means we always put our customers first, even if they aren't showing us the same courtesy and respect that we show them. Talk to the interviewer about how you turn negative customer interactions into positives.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I really believe in being a brand ambassador when I'm at work, so I always do my best to make sure that customers' needs are met regardless of their attitude. If a customer is rude or aggressive toward me, I treat them with kindness and hospitality. It's never okay to react in a negative way to a customer who is upset or having a bad day. Being a brand ambassador sometimes means swallowing your pride when a customer is rude to you."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"Rude customers don't bother me. If a customer was rude to me or a coworker, I would just give the customer space and probably let my coworkers know that the customer doesn't seem to want to be bothered. If the interaction moves from rude to aggressive or hostile, I would be sure to let my manager know that we may want to watch the customer: while I like to believe the best about people, I also think it's a priority to make sure my coworkers and other customers are safe."

  9. 9.

You will be responsible for a large amount of cash and valuable merchandise at Home Bargains. What would your most recent employer say about your character and honesty?

Home Bargains is looking for reliable, honest sales workers, and we want to know that we can trust you with the cash and merchandise. How would you describe your character? How can the management team at Home Bargains know that they can trust you?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I have a proven track record for being honest, dependable, and a person of integrity. Throughout my career in retail, I've regularly been promoted to leadership positions at work, where I have access to the tills and cash when no one else is around. I continue to earn positions like these because my managers know that they can trust me to treat the cash and merchandise with respect."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"My most recent employer would say that I am a person of integrity. I fully believe in honesty at all times."

  10. 10.

What do you hope to learn from this job at Home Bargains?

At Home Bargains, we're interested in hiring sales assistants who are passionate about excellent customer service and dedicated to bringing their best to work every day. We're ready to invest in employees who show natural talent for the industry and enthusiasm to learn more. Talk to the interviewer about what you're hoping to learn during your time at Home Bargains.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I am looking to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. I'm excited to gain a working knowledge of the way that stores work because I'm looking to take my career in the retail industry to the next level. I'm especially interested in management on a large scale -- my goal is to one day become a district or regional manager, and I know I have a lot to learn! I'm really excited about the possibility of working toward my goals with Home Bargains."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I hope to gain stronger skills in communication and customer service. I understand that retail can be challenging because of the multiple personalities you are faced with on a daily basis. I believe this will help my confidence to grow, and my sales skills as well."

  11. 11.

How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

We believe that a happy workplace equals a productive workplace, so we do all we can to make sure our Home Bargains employees feel seen and appreciated for their unique contributions to our team. Our rapid expansion means that we are able to invest in our people like never before, ensuring that no potential is ever wasted. Talk to the interviewer about ways that you appreciate being recognized for your accomplishments at work.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I am very much an over-achiever and find that the best way for me to be recognized for a job well done is through words of kindness and recognition. I am easily encouraged, and the best reward for me is to know that my hard work is noticed."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"As a sales professional, I am driven by a challenge with a financial perk. Sales contests, for example, are a great way to motivate me."

  12. 12.

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

Home Bargains, like many other retailers, is a fast-paced, constantly-changing environment. It's not for those who enjoy the same routine day-in and day-out. We want each of our employees to be happy and enthusiastic about their work here, so the interviewer will want to know what kind of work environment hasn't been a good fit for you in the past.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"For a number of years, I was working in an office setting: I stayed in my cubicle for 8 hours a day and rarely saw other people. After a while, I couldn't take it anymore, which is why I transitioned into the retail industry. I don't enjoy mundanity; I like every day to feel fresh, new, and exciting in an environment where I'm surrounded by people and lots of active things to do."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I want to work somewhere that is warm, inviting, and friendly, where every customer and employee feels welcome. I've worked in stores in the past that don't have a hospitable culture, where employees were sniping at each other and were in constant competition. I don't last long in those environments because I prefer to work somewhere that is respectful, encouraging, and based on collaboration and teamwork."

  13. 13.

Take me through your experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?

We're looking for quick-thinking, seasoned retail problem-solvers here at Home Bargains, so retail experience is definitely preferred though not required. If you have retail experience, walk the interviewer through your work history; or, if you're just starting out in the retail industry, talk to the interviewer about what makes you well-suited for a job at Home Bargains.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it so challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"My most challenging position, and also my most favorite position, would be my current role. I would not normally choose to leave; however, I need to find a position related to my newly acquired degree. In my current position, the hours are great, my co-workers are nice, and I receive fair compensation."

  14. 14.

What is the most competitive work situation you have experienced? How did you handle it? What was the result?

At Home Bargains, we're always on the lookout for strong achievers who show unparalleled customer service and sales skills. That's why we operate a rewards scheme, which celebrates staff who go the extra mile. This naturally lends itself to healthy, friendly competition in our stores. Talk to your interviewer about how you respond to a competitive environment.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I enjoy some healthy competition at work, as long as it's friendly and doesn't feel toxic. I like to celebrate the accomplishments of my teammates and want to know that my accomplishments will be celebrated as well."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm very motivated by competition -- I'm a competitive person, so I'm always eager to rise to the challenge whenever there's an opportunity to excel at something. I'm definitely excited about the rewards scheme here; can you tell me more about it?"

  15. 15.

What do you know about Home Bargains? Why do you want to work for us?

From its humble beginnings over 40 years ago, Home Bargains has become one of the fastest-growing businesses in the UK. We're a family business with family values. Tell the interviewer what you know about Home Bargains. What stands out to you about the Home Bargains way of operating?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I love what Home Bargains has to say about giving customers a luxury-shopping experience with a budget price tag. I really believe that everyone should have access to the best goods and services regardless of their income level, and I would love to work for a company that is serving its community in such an active, purposeful way."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm really excited about the idea of working for a privately-owned, family-operated company that has such a strong reputation for family values and bringing quality products to UK shoppers. I have a long history of shop-owners in my family, so I appreciate how much hard work it takes to get a company like this off the ground, and I really respect the way that Home Bargains has accomplished such rapid growth."
