1. What type of work environment allows you to be the most productive?
How to Answer
Progressive lists three types of positions - some that require employees to be in the office 100% of the time, others that are remote 100% of the time, and hybrid roles where employees work a certain number of days in the office and the rest remotely. With any of these environments, you must be able to limit distractions and meet deadlines. Discuss what type of environment you prefer or work best in.

2. What time management techniques do you use at work?
How to Answer
Progressive values accountability, so this question is designed to understand your ability to prioritize, organize, and time manage your projects/assignments to meet expectations and deadlines. Use this opportunity to highlight your ability to multi-task and explain your techniques for staying organized and managing your time effectively.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I have worked remotely for the last three years and have found some effective time management strategies. Each week, I create a dashboard of my tasks and prioritize them by color. I block out "do not disturb" times on my calendar, where I let my manager know that I will be closing out my email and messenger applications and will be in a focus time to work on important tasks without disruptions. I also have weekly one-on-one touchpoints with my manager for accountability, which pushes me to ensure my tasks get done."

2nd Answer Example
"Self-organization is extremely important to manage my time effectively. I work in a fast-paced environment with a lot of projects going on at once. I first make a list of all the tasks I need to complete, and then I review them to see where I can delegate tasks to team members. I also use different applications like Calendly and Toggl to save time and keep myself organized."

5. One of Progressive's core values is integrity. How do you demonstrate integrity in the workplace?
How to Answer
Integrity is number one on Progressive's core value list. This question allows the interviewer to discover more about your character. It's not uncommon for ethical dilemmas in the workplace to come up from time to time, so speak openly about any relevant experiences you've had. Think carefully about your answer, as it will leave a strong impression. Demonstrate your ability to follow a company policy for this type of issue and your commitment to honesty, integrity, and loyalty to your organization.
Show examples of how you've "done the right thing," even when it may have cost you personally or professionally. Demonstrate how you bring honesty and fairness to the team and how you have been a good role model to others.

1st Answer Example
"I always do the right thing, even when no one is looking. In my last position, I was responsible for the cash deposit daily, and in the four years I worked at the company, there was never a discrepancy. There were many opportunities to take money out of the drawer or falsify records, and I was always honest and did what was right. I best show my integrity by being a consistently reliable employee."
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I interact with 20-30 customers through the call center daily, and I see each ticket through to the end. There are many ways to reroute the customer to someone else and many opportunities to tell the customer what they want to hear while not taking appropriate action on the backend, and I have never done either. I pride myself on always being honest with customers, and if there is something I don't know, I am upfront and let them know I will research it and get back to them instead of making something up."

6. What causes you to feel dissatisfied on the job?
How to Answer
The interviewer wants to discover more about what makes you feel valued and content in the workplace and what factors might make you feel dissatisfied. Consider factors like engagement, recognition and rewards, work-life balance, compensation, and motivation. When answering this question, be concise and maintain a positive tone.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I prefer a work environment where feedback is provided regularly. I like to know how I'm doing and if I'm meeting expectations, and I appreciate constructive feedback if there are areas I could improve. I can feel dissatisfied if I'm not receiving that feedback from my manager more often than in a yearly performance review. I avoid this by being open and honest with my manager and communicating my needs openly."
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"Teamwork and engagement are important to me. I do best in an environment where there is a lot of collaboration and interaction among the team, especially when working remotely. If I feel isolated or like I don't have a lot of communication or interactions with my team and manager, I tend to feel dissatisfied."

7. How do you respond to feedback?
How to Answer
The interviewer is trying to gauge how you respond to positive, critical, and constructive feedback. Demonstrate your professional maturity by giving examples of times you have received feedback and how you positively reacted to it. The ideal candidate will view feedback as an opportunity to improve and grow; someone who responds negatively to feedback will be a red flag to the interviewer.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Even though it can be difficult to hear criticism, I always pause before I respond and take time to think about it first. If it catches me by surprise, I usually ask if my manager can clarify or explain. I want to grow and improve, so the more specific my supervisor can be, the more helpful it is."
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"It's important to receive feedback regularly and in real-time, versus an annual performance review. I appreciate knowing what I'm doing well and where I need to improve. Suppose I have a conversation with my manager and receive negative feedback. In that case, I usually ask for specific examples to help me understand the situation and where I could improve."

This is a great start, but I suggest updating the last line "value a culture that puts money into their employees" and instead saying something like, "I value a culture that is committed to developing their employees." You want your response to focus more on development and less on money, which can be a red flag for some interviewers.

9. When have you had to think quickly in response to sudden change?
How to Answer
The insurance industry is in a constant state of evolution, so Progressive is looking for employees who can readily adapt to change. Interviewers ask this question to understand how you respond to and manage change. Adaptability is a critical skill to possess to be successful at Progressive, so consider all your past work environments when answering this question. Use this time to demonstrate that you are flexible and can maintain a positive attitude throughout the change process.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I can think quickly on the job and respond well to sudden change. Last week, I was asked to tweak a presentation with just 30 minutes' notice. The changes were significant, but luckily, I work well under pressure. The presentation went well, and our clients were happy."
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"In my last role, we were often short-staffed, so my assignment and schedule might be set for the week, but my manager may ask me to randomly pivot and meet with a customer in another area or do a presentation for a different company on less than a day's notice. On Tuesday, I received his leave petition for that week, then I realized and spoke with him and adjusted the maintenance dates accordingly. 20. If you noticed a pattern of similar customer complaints, what would you do?
How to Answer
Progressive has thousands of customers and offers many avenues for customers to contact the company (phone, email, chat). Customers could contact you with any number of issues, including account or billing concerns, technical problems, or product concerns. Your interviewers ask this question to gain insight into your attention to detail, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to take action. Speak about the process you would follow in this scenario.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I'm very data-driven and have an analytical mind, so I often pick up on patterns like this. I have used software to track the types of customer calls I handle, and if I notice a pattern of complaints or feedback, I immediately notify my supervisor. I once had 25 calls come in one day from customers who were having trouble accessing their accounts, so I called my supervisor and escalated it to IT. It's important to take swift action if there is an influx of complaints so that the issue can quickly be addressed."

2nd Answer Example
"If I noticed a pattern of similar complaints, I would quickly try to determine the root cause of the issue to see if it was something I could fix. If it was not, I would immediately notify my supervisor and provide as much data as possible about the complaints."

21. If a customer was unhappy, how would you handle the situation?
How to Answer
With over 50,000 customers, a Progressive customer will inevitably be unhappy at some point. The interviewer wants to understand how you would handle a challenging situation and how you react under pressure. In your answer, include aspects like customer service skills, critical thinking, patience, communication skills, empathy, and the ability to resolve conflicts.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I have several years of experience in customer service and have taken many calls from upset customers, and I feel that conflict resolution is something I excel at. I typically let the customer speak first and actively listen to them without interrupting. To be sure I understand the problem or situation, I repeat what I heard so I can effectively assist the customer. I empathize and let them know I care about their concern and hear their frustration, and I reassure them that I will do all I can to help them find a resolution. I'm very level-headed and do not let emotions get the best of me in these situations. If I cannot assist the customer at my level, I escalate it to the appropriate person who can help them."
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"In my current role, I've completed a great deal of customer service training focused on dealing with difficult or angry customers. I am patient with them and let them voice their concerns before jumping in to help. I maintain a positive attitude and tone, even if the customer is not kind. I always try to put myself in their shoes, and you never know what kind of day someone has had, so I don't take their anger or frustration personally. I do all that I can do self-help and assist them, including checking my resources or checking with team members. I want every customer to be happy, and if I cannot find an acceptable resolution, I will escalate it immediately to my team lead or supervisor."

"Customer service is friendly and helpful. When working with customers, I always try to be as welcoming and positive as possible. I also do my best to listen to their concerns and help them find solutions.
For instance, when I worked at the community center, I had a parent who was upset because they couldn't get their child into our baseball program. I listened to their concerns and explained that we could only have a certain amount of players due to playing time. I also explained that we had sign-ups for the last three months. Then I let them know the best thing I can do for them is to put them on a waiting list if we have a player drop out for some reason. Then, I helped them fill out the application."

Great! Including an example strengthens your response. Mentioning friendliness, listening, and being solution-oriented is perfect. You might also mention apologizing to the customer for the trouble, expressing gratitude for their patience, and always making sure to follow up if you can't immediately solve their problem. Conclude by reminding the interviewer that you look forward to working with and solving problems for their clients if they hire you in the future. Nice job!
Customer Service
22. How would you respond if a customer asked you a question you didn't know the answer to?
How to Answer
Progressive offers a wide range of insurance products, so you will likely run into a situation where you're unsure of an answer to a customer's question. Demonstrate to the interviewer that you can acknowledge when you don't know something instead of making it up on the fly and commit to finding that answer and following up with the customer timely. Give an example of how you self-help and track down information or how you've found the appropriate person to ask. Telling a customer, "I don't know," or "that's not my department," is never appropriate, and the interviewer wants to learn more about your problem-solving approach.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"As a newer employee, I would have a lot to learn, so I'm sure I will run into a situation where I cannot immediately answer a customer's question. I would be honest with the customer and let them know I would research the answer and get back to them shortly. I would never make up an answer and would try to self-help with my available resources, and if I could not locate the answer timely, I would reach out to a colleague or manager to assist."
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"The customer experience is always my top priority, so if they asked a question to which I didn't know the answer, I would reassure them that I would find the answer for them and help them resolve the issue. If I knew it would take me some time to track down the answer, I would ask them if they had time to hold while I looked, and if they didn't, I would take their information down and get back to them timely. Follow-up is also important to me, and if I committed to finding an answer and getting back to them, I would ensure that I did."

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are a core focus of Progressive, and they have most recently won Forbes' 2022 Best Employer for Diversity award, so a question related to this topic is very possible. In your response, demonstrate that you understand the meaning of each (DE&I) aspect and speak honestly about what it means to you on a personal and professional level. Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022

Leadership
30. How do you provide feedback to your employees?
How to Answer
If you are applying for a leadership position at Progressive, you may encounter this question. To be an effective leader, you must provide employees with positive and constructive feedback. Consider times when you had to demonstrate empathy or handle a situation delicately. Give examples of techniques you use to deliver feedback and give examples where possible.
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 20th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I typically provide feedback in a one-on-one setting and in real-time. If there is an issue or concern, I go directly to that employee to address it face to face versus sending an email, instant message, or worse, waiting until their quarterly reviews. I always give specific examples in my feedback and take the emotion out. For example, 'I feel like you're always late' would not be appropriate. I would document the days and times the employee was late, use those examples in my feedback, and review the attendance policy and expectations.
I like my team members to know how they are performing at all times, and I never want anyone to be blind-sided in a performance review. I firmly believe in providing feedback (both positive and constructive) timely and allowing the employee to ask questions."

I prefer face-to-face or virtual one-on-one settings to discuss feedback, and then I follow up with an email recap of what we've discussed and the expectations, if applicable. How to Answer
Progressive offers base pay that represents your role within our company, the market rate, and the skills and experience you bring. Provide the interviewer with a target range you would like your salary to fall within, given your experience and the position you are applying for. By providing a range, you are demonstrating flexibility while also voicing what you feel your value is. If other benefits like employee discounts, work-life balance, health benefits, mental health services, retirement saving options, etc., are important to you, also share that you would consider those when considering a compensation package.

Candidates must be able to travel to and meet with all agencies within this geographic area. 25% of overnight travel will be required." Review this requirement ahead of time so you can respond to this question.
Don't be afraid to ask follow-up questions here. Ask if the travel is weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc. and if Progressive pays for mileage and lodging. Knowing all the details will allow you to answer more honestly. Think about whether or not you will be able to travel and if you will need advanced notice each time. If you have limitations restricting your ability, be upfront about it; if you have some flexibility, speak openly about the circumstances.

1st Answer Example
"In my previous sales role, I was required to travel 50% of the time, and it was no problem. Because it's overnight travel, I would ask to have as much notice as possible so I can arrange my personal affairs."

"I am willing to travel and understand the importance of meeting face-to-face to maintain relationships. I'm flexible during the week; however, weekends would be more of a constraint. Can you share how frequently weekends would be required?"

38. How do you feel globalization has affected the Insurance industry?

Globalization is a business concept that encourages international trade to strengthen the economic situation between countries. Discuss with the interviewer your thoughts on how this practice may affect the Insurance industry and, more specifically, Progressive.

1st Answer Example
"I feel that globalization has forced many companies to be creative and flexible in their business insurance needs. Namely, companies that now have international offices hire offshore employees and participate in global trade. It has caused the Insurance industry to think outside of the box and has, in my opinion, created some very thought-provoking challenges."
