  1. 1.

Facebook celebrates diversity. In which ways do you honor those different from you?

      How to Answer

Facebook releases an annual diversity report, and it would be an excellent idea for you to read it through before your interview. In one of Facebook's diversity reports, the company acknowledges that recruitment and retention are critical components to a diverse workforce. They have built strong relationships with organizations that support people of color and women, including Anita Borg/Grace Hopper, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and the National Society of Black Engineers. Facebook has substantially increased its female hire percentage as well.

As you can see, diversity and inclusion are celebrated topics within the Facebook organization, and the interviewer would like to know that you share this mindset.

      Rachelle's Answer

"As a visible minority myself, I make a conscious effort to include others in learning about my unique culture. Also, I am broad-minded with it comes to the needs and differences of others. Diversity to me is not simply a matter of culture but also of gender identity, age, and more. I am conscious of being sensitive to others in every action that I take in the workplace."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I appreciate the open and transparent effort that Facebook makes when it comes to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, especially after reading your most recent diversity report. I embrace those different from me and utilize those differences as learning opportunities. I am sensitive to the needs of others and empathetic to the fact that everyone walks a different path, whether that be related to gender identity, sexual orientation, heritage, and more."

"I am actually very excited by the environment and opportunities to work with people who are different from me. I feel like I am stimulated, learn to think from a different perspective, and can develop my thoughts further in that way. I have worked in a diverse environment all throughout my career and maintained the attitude of being a good listener, trying to understand where the person is coming from, empathize, and try to find a way to integrate people's different perspectives into our teamwork."

      Stephanie's Answer

This response articulates your self-reflection and openness to collaborating with folks who are different from you. In an age where diversity, equity, and inclusion are being prioritized in many workplaces, this is an excellent quality to have. Because your response is rather general and diversity can mean a lot of different things, you may wish to be a little more specific about the ways in which diversity has shown up for you in past work environments.

"I always respect people's differences and cultures, and I actually love learning new things about different cultures and different ways of thinking."

      Stephanie's Answer

Your response embodies your appreciation for diversity, but it lacks specifics. How do you honor and celebrate those who are different from you? (Example response below.)

"Respecting people's differences and cultures is really important to me. I love learning from people with different backgrounds than I do, whether that is due to race, ethnicity, gender expression, age, socioeconomic background, education, religion, etc. There is so much I can learn from different cultures and ways of thinking! For example, this year, I participated in several PRIDE community events as an LGBTQ ally. I really value listening to other people's perspectives and love to celebrate different experiences from my own."
