I would like to have a full understanding of your experience and portfolio. What types of industries have your previous projects been involved in?

The software and technology industry is all-encompassing, and it is essential for the interviewer to have a full understanding of the sectors and types of projects in which you bring experience. Be sure to highlight any projects or clients mainly related to Adyen as that may pique the interviewer's interest!

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"I have experience in a wide range of industries including healthcare, retail, and education. Most notably, I have worked in merchant services for organizations similar to yours including Stripe."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"A great alternative to explaining your projects is to bring a substantial portfolio with you. "I wanted to show you a full range of my experience, so I have brought you a digital portfolio of my work. Would you like to take a look?"

      Anonymous Answer

"I worked in a range of industries, including software development, investment, medical research, and most notably banking, which might be useful, if I get hired."

      Rachelle's Answer

This answer is a great start! I recommend presenting these experiences more positively/confidently as they will for sure be useful :) I have provided a starter for you, below.

"I have valuable exposure to a range of industries, including software development, investment, medical research, and most notably, banking. The most important transferable skills I have gained are...(list a few that will apply to the role at Adyen)."

  2. 2.

What would you consider your technical specialty?

Adyen specializes in payment technology that allows businesses to accept e-commerce, mobile, and point-of-sale payments. Do you have any particular areas of interest or ability when it comes to payment solutions? Talk to the interviewer about your strengths and be sure to highlight any specific skills that you excel in. It's a great idea, if you can, to highlight particular skills that may be listed on the company's job posting/job description. If there is a related area of interest where you'd like to expand your skills, you can mention those as well.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"Computing and Network Communications has always been a solid area for me. I have a big interest in how network communication improves our daily lives and our overall business efficiency. I see that you are looking for team members who are experts in network communications which is what caught my eye when I first saw your job posting."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"I have been focusing my career on becoming a cloud integration specialist although I do have cross-platform app development expertise as well. I could help with your Android and iOS application needs."

      Anonymous Answer

"I always say that I like programming because it's just like solving puzzles. I would say my biggest technical specialty is being able to use code as a tool to answer questions or solve problems. I co-developed a tool that automated customer profiling as a way to address the problem other teammates had. I think that could be useful in the position you're offering."

      Rachelle's Answer

Your answer is very well balanced - this is great. You discuss your specialty, give a clear example, and include a final positioning statement. Well done!

Was this answer helpful? Yes or No
  3. 3.

We want to hire people at Adyen who have the desire to lead others. How many people did you supervise at your last position?

Discuss with the interviewer your level of responsibility in your current position. If you have managed larger teams than you currently are, you can also discuss that particular role from your work history.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"Currently, I am supervising 12 employees with an overall portfolio responsibility of $24MM. In my role, before this one, I managed 23 employees but with a smaller portfolio of $6MM. I can handle a large range of employees."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"Although I did not officially supervise anyone in my most recent position, I always had my eye out for opportunities to lead or mentor the more junior staff."

      Anonymous Answer

"At my current position, I am working on an independent project. I have a team of supervisors who I have to keep up to date and can consult with whenever I'm in doubt."

      Rachelle's Answer

Nice review and good work, making this answer work for you! If you'd like, there is room for further detail, such as how many supervisors/their role and your communication style with them (high-level overview).

  4. 4.

What does the word 'innovation' mean to you?

The term 'innovation' is often overused in business these days and has now become a buzzword that many people don't fully understand. The interviewer would like to know what you feel innovation indeed is. Include an example of a time when you have witnessed an innovative change in the workplace, or when you have exercised creativity.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"To me, innovation means presenting a new idea or making an existing idea better. It's important to be innovative in the workplace, but often it's a misunderstood concept. An example of when I was innovative was when our company was facing budget cuts. I suggested that we begin to operate as though the cuts were already made, in an attempt to preemptively save funds. The concept worked well, and we were able to eliminate many unnecessary expenditures."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"I encourage my team to be innovative by asking the impossible of themselves, and their coworkers. We will get together once per week and bring up situations that we think are out of our scope and then reverse engineer these ideas to see how we could go about putting them into action. To me, this is being innovative in the workplace."

      Anonymous Answer

"To me, innovation means delivering new, creative solutions in an agile way. I think it's important to act fast but maintain the focus on quality. I like the this story I read about: a team was building medical VR connected gloves, but because of the heavy regulations, they pivoted and started selling the product to car manufacturers."

      Rachelle's Answer

An excellent example of innovation! By adding some storytelling to your answer, you make your interview even more memorable.

  5. 5.

When have you had to adapt to change in the workplace?

The world of tech can change on a dime, and the interviewer at Adyen needs to know that you can keep up with the demands. Being able to adapt to change in the workplace is an essential skill to possess because change is inevitable. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you have had to adjust to changes on the job. How did you handle the transition? Was it a positive reaction?

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"In my current role there is a lot of staff turnover when it comes to our management team. I have had to adapt to 3 new managers in the past four years. It is not the ideal situation, but I can adjust for the good of the team."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"In my previous role at a high-growth tech startup, the sales organization was restructured, from a new boss to new teams and territories. Some of the accounts I had been nurturing but had not yet converted to a buyer yet were now handed off to another sales rep who received the fruits of my labor. Of course, this fact was very frustrating. However, by sitting down with management to understand the "why" of the change, and how I could best set my new accounts up for success while transitioning my previous ones over to a new rep, I was able to see the bigger objective and ultimately increase my sales performance."

      Anonymous Answer

"I think the COVID-19 pandemic was such a change for many people. Switching from having support at arms length to being locked alone in an apartment. It was a trying time, but it also had positive aspects. Having everything online meant I was jumping from University Zoom lecture to Teams meetings for work. It required some flexibility, but in the end, I want to think of it as a positive learning experience."

      Rachelle's Answer

Your mindset and approach are both so positive - any interviewer will be happy to hear that you have kept yourself active and involved during this challenging time.

    What are your salary expectations?

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open, and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary based questions arise.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $66,000 per year plus health benefits. I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"I am currently making $80,000 per year with two bonus opportunities based on project completion. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the responsibilities of this role and provides an opportunity to learn new skills."

      Anonymous Answer

"I would like to earn 40k+, as I believe this aligns with the level of the responsibilities and my experience and skills."

      Rachelle's Answer

Salary questions are complicated, so this is a fair start! However, I recommend that you avoid giving one solid number. A range is a good idea unless you know exactly what this role offers, and the company is firm on that number. Anonymous Answer

"I think this role would be perfect for me, as it combines the things I like: social and data science. It is technical enough that it can help me grow in that part, but it also requires research and soft skills. I like that it seems I will have a lot of independence in my work. I also think I would love the company's atmosphere."

      Rachelle's Answer

Wonderful! It sounds as though there will be a lot to enjoy in this role! I recommend adding in some specific details in particular areas. I have highlighted a few opportunities for expanding your answer.

"I think this role would be perfect for me, as it combines two of my favorite things - social and data science. This role is technical enough that it can help me grow in those areas, but it also requires research on... (include topics) and soft skills...(such as). It seems I will have a lot of independence in my work, which is also appealing as I am...(include a quality such as self-driven). I also believe I will love Adyen's atmosphere...(explain a couple of primary culture points that appeal the most)."

Culture fit is important to us at Adyen. How would you describe your personality?

The way that Adyen has set up their company culture, you have the opportunity to spread your wings and show them what you can do. Adyen seeks out people who take ownership of their work and are not afraid to jump in, showing great initiative. One of the employee reviews says, 'I started as an intern, and now I'm the Mobile Product Manager. If you take the initiative you have the opportunity to achieve a lot!' Take the time to describe your personality, your work style, and how you believe you will fit in with the positive Adyen culture.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"I would describe my personality as approachable, creative, and willing to jump in. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me. I show a great amount of initiative and am keen on learning new skills from my colleagues and educational resources."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"Try to include a variety of words that the interviewer does not hear all the time. Be unique! Here are some ideas:

      - Adaptable
      - Considerate
      - Diligent
      - Intuitive
      - Persistent
      - Resourceful
      - Sincere
      - Witty"

      Anonymous Answer

"I am someone who is very focused on delivering high-quality work. My preferred way of working is a mixture of individual and teamwork. I like having ownership of my work and independence, but I like having people around me who specialize in other fields, whom I can bounce ideas off of and vice versa. I am always open to helping others, and I am usually proactive in my work."

      Rachelle's Answer

Very well said! Your answer shows a lot of balance in your approach to work. You also highlight the fact that you like to learn from others, which is a significant bonus!

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"When I was preparing for this interview I noticed that Adyen was recently named on the CNBC Disruptor 50 list. I understand this list is exclusive to private companies changing the world through innovation. You are a trailblazer when it comes to innovation in the payment solutions arena which is amazing."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"After reading reviews on your company, I believe that your reputation is the most solid and sincere of all your competitors. Also, congratulations on being ranked #16 on the CNBC Disruptor 50 list for your innovative payments platform. That is incredible news!"

      Anonymous Answer

"After reading a lot about Adyen, I think what makes you different is your transparency and honesty. Additionally, The Adyen Formula is visible as a guiding force in your company. I think because of that, your results for the first quarter were not affected as much by the Covid-19 outbreak."

      Rachelle's Answer

This answer is a great start! When it comes to the transparency and honesty of Adyen, do you have a specific example to provide? I l like where you are going with the COVID impact - could you expand even further on this thought?

This role with Adyen is highly technical. What is your understanding of this position and the responsibilities that come with it?

Assure the interviewer that you bring a full understanding of the technical requirements attached to this particular job. It is essential that you research the role and thoroughly consume the information provided in the company's job posting/job description. Keep your answer to the point.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"From our previous conversation, understanding the job description, and researching the role online I feel that the job is best described as a Network Engineer focused on merchant relationships, as well as internal projects, ensuring the perfect delivery of Adyen's POS solutions. The technical requirements that you would like to see are primarily in networks, firewalls, Linux, monitoring, and security. I am well versed in the tasks and programs you are asking for and am confident that I meet the strict requirements to perform in this role successfully."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"My understanding is that you seek a candidate with expert level skills in IP networking, DNS, HTTP, and network security, who can train junior employees. I am an expert in all four of these areas. Do you have any questions about my technical expertise?"

      Anonymous Answer

"I saw the tutorials on your chargeback tool. There is a lot of data from that tool, and I can imagine there is even more available. I understand that my responsibilities are making sense of this data, finding patterns of chargeback claims, and finding solutions that clients could implement to improve their process. This requires skills in predictive analytics and visualization, which I have."

      Rachelle's Answer

It is clear that you have done your research on the job and responsibilities. It's terrific that you mention the specific skills that will benefit Adyen (predictive analytics and visualization). The more specific you are, the easier it will be for the interviewer to picture you in the role.

How do you keep up-to-date on new technologies and trends in this industry?

One way that a potential employer will gauge 'fit' is by ensuring that you are passionate about your particular industry. Show the interviewer that you are passionate about payment technology, and cloud technology by openly discussing how you stay on top of industry trends. In tech, there is a multitude of variety when it comes to educating yourself and staying up to date on changes. Because tech changes by the minute, it is especially important that you lean on reliable resources.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"I keep up to date on new technologies and trends through a variety of sources. I follow three different blogs from industry leaders as well as read multiple articles online per week from reliable sources such as TechCrunch and Mashable."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"I keep up on new trends in tech by taking additional coursework online, whenever possible. I also follow a few of my favorite influencers on social media such as Elon Musk, Guy Kawasaki, and Kara Swisher."

      Anonymous Answer

"I have a DataCamp account and a list of courses I want to complete. I am subscribed to a newsletter from Medium, and I try to read up on new advancements."

      Rachelle's Answer

Awesome! You show a lot of variety in your learning and resources. Also, you use reputable sources which the interviewer will be happy to see.

Which parts of your current position bring you the most stress?

Life at Adyen can get a bit hairy, depending on your position and how many changes come your way on a weekly basis. Talk to the interviewer about which areas of your career are the most stressful. Ensure that your answer does not include a factor that would make you appear unfit for the position (IE: a software engineer should not find writing code to be the most stressful part of the job).

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"The part of my career that brings me the most stress is when the schedule is running behind due to lack of hustle on my teams part. I like to be on time with my schedule to ensure that my clients are taken care of."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"My targets are pretty inflated at the moment, despite the bad economic situation. Every year, we have an automatic 15% increase in our targets when in reality, many of my big clients are clawing back on their spending this year. It stresses me out because I have doubled my cold calling numbers and spend 30% more time on the road, but the numbers just aren't adding up yet."

  13. 13.

What questions do you have for me?

It's always a great idea to have questions ready for the interviewer. Review the company website and other online resources to ensure the queries you have are not mundane, or redundant. The last thing an interviewer wants to hear is a list of items you could have found the answers for from merely watching a video on Adyen's website!

      Here are some sample questions:

      - When would you like to have this position filled?
      - How long has this role been vacant?
      - Is this a replacement search or a newly created role?
      - What is your favorite part about working here?
      - What is the company's primary goal for this position in the next 12 months?
      - Is there anything from my background and experience that I can clarify for you?
      - What do you see as the most significant change in this industry over the past three years?
      - Is there any reason why you would not hire me?

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"Thank you for asking - I do have a few questions. What is top of mind when it comes to filling this role? Also, what types of career growth opportunities would follow this position? And lastly, do you have internal candidates who are also interviewing for this position?"

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"I appreciate you opening the floor for questions. I am wondering what your timeline is for a decision on this opening? Also, what was the biggest struggle the last software engineer encountered in this role?"

  14. 14.

What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year?

The interviewer wants to know that you are interested in your industry, and career growth, enough to take your professional development into your own hands. Even if your current employer does not offer perks like tech conferences or tuition reimbursement, there is no reason why you cannot take the initiative.

      You could:

      - Read industry or career-related books
      - Subscribe to relevant podcasts
      - Enhance your education with an additional certificate
      - Attend a conference related to your career or personal growth
      - Teach yourself a new software program
      - Read established journals and websites on a regular basis
      - Find a mentor who is senior to you, in your particular industry or career path

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"This year, I committed to improving my knowledge by reading one book per month. I mapped out my twelve books ahead of time, including topics on my career as a software engineer, the tech industry, personal development, politics, history, and leadership. I would be happy to share the list with you if you'd like!"

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"I subscribe to a variety of management related podcasts, which I listen to every morning on my commute to work. The list of podcasts that I listen to include Gary Vaynerchuk's 'Ask Gary Vee' Show, 'What Great Bosses Know,' with Jill Geisler, and 'Dose of Leadership' with Richard Rierson. The lessons I have learned from these industry pros are invaluable, and I love that I can commit my driving time to develop myself professionally and personally."

      Anonymous Answer

"I invested in a DataCamp subscription, and I try to do courses regularly. I also got all the necessary credits in December, but I am taking courses at the university because I found the topics important and interesting. After graduating, I'm planning on, at some point, starting an online degree in computer science."

      Rachelle's Answer

Fabulous! It is apparent that you are a person who will invest in themselves and their professional growth. These are qualities that every interviewer appreciates. Well done!

How do you motivate yourself to keep going, even when you do not feel like remaining on task?

It is essential that, as a professional, you can remain on task and focused even when your motivation levels may not be high. Adyen has a lot of fun in the office, but they also would like to know that you are highly diligent and disciplined. Nobody is wholly motivated 100% of the time but do assure the interviewer that you can quickly get yourself back on track.

      Rachelle's Answer #1

"When I am not feeling completely on task, I will take a quick walk or run to the nearest Starbucks for a coffee. I am usually very focused, so if I am feeling foggy, it's just my body telling me to change my pace for a few minutes."

      Rachelle's Answer #2

"As a manager, I need to keep myself, and my team motivated as much as possible. I will run contests for gift cards or inter-office competitions with some reward attached. Seeing the energy from my team keeps me motivated on days that I may not be feeling as energized as I could."
