The interviewer would like to know how you plan to start relationships with your new coworkers and supervisors to determine if you will be a good match with the company culture. Due to a wide variety of personalities, professional connections can take time to form. How do you ensure that you have a strong line of communication with your coworkers and supervisors right from the start?
Here are some ideas for getting started on the right foot:
- Introduce yourself to everyone you meet
- Be willing to accept feedback and help
- Offer to join a committee or volunteer assistance in some way
- Do not have an air of entitlement or act as though you know the ins and outs immediately
- Avoid all company gossip, at all cost
- Be early on your first day (and every day after that!)
- Come dressed appropriately

I usually first try to know the people I work closely with and understand the company's dynamics. I think it's important to be respectful of the fact that there is an established culture that existed long before you came there. However, I am a very pleasant and open person; I make friends easily. I always offer to help, and I like taking part in company activities.

Rachelle's Feedback
Nice! You sound like an absolute pleasure to work with! Your approach is professional and respectful.

My approach is to work hard, play hard "” both are vital.
Play includes sitting with colleagues at lunch, getting a coffee with colleagues "” get to know who is who, and build rapport with them.
Simultaneously, I work hard to speed up my time to productivity "” I ask for advice, listen, learn quickly, then I put it all into action.

Rachelle's Feedback
You mention some good initial approaches to getting to know your coworkers and leaders. It seems you are friendly and ready to build meaningful colleague relationships. Your openness to asking for advice and listening should certainly be appreciated as well.
Anonymous Answer
My first action would be to understand the company culture and how co-workers fit into that then align myself to that and my personality would speak for itself. I believe myself to be approachable and helpful individual that adds value to any team. I like to have chats over coffee.
Marcie's Feedback
Understanding the company culture will be key. Beyond that, you might also discuss how you will introduce yourself to your new colleagues and initiate meetings and get-togethers to learn more about them and their expectations. In addition, talk about how you plan to build trust and earn their respect. Great job!
