"Just recently I had a customer ask for the location of a lawnmower on the shop floor, they weren't really prepared for a bulk purchase; no trolley!I lead them to where the item was and asked if they would like some help to purchase and get it to their car. I ended up not only getting them the trolley but also lifting it into their car.As we went to the car I took the time to explain the layout of the non-food area and where new promotions would be."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I'm really cool-headed and even-tempered, so I don't panic when something unexpected happens on the way to work. I had a flat tire a few months ago when I was driving into the store where I work now -- nothing could have prevented it, and no one was at fault. My first call was to my manager, explaining the situation but that I would be there as quickly as I could, and then I got to work changing the tire. I made it to the store about fifteen minutes late, made my apologies, and everything was fine."

Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. "I always give myself an extra time-buffer when I leave for work just in case something catches me by surprise. That way, I'm not stressed out if something happens because I've already prepared for it in advance."

"I always leave for work with the intention of being at least 20 minutes early, my car is well maintained so in the unlikely event of me being made late it would be due to circumstances outside of my control."

Do you have reliable transportation?

"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

"I take public transit; however, I find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm which stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

"For a number of years, I was working in an office setting: I stayed in my cubicle for 8 hours a day and rarely saw other people. After a while, I couldn't take it anymore, which is why I transitioned into the retail industry. I don't enjoy mundanity; I like every day to feel fresh, new, and exciting in an environment where I'm surrounded by people and lots of active things to do."

Home Bargains, like many other retailers, is a fast-paced, constantly-changing environment. It's not for those who enjoy the same routine day-in and day-out. When I showed up for orientation for my new job, there had been miscommunication about how many hours the orientation would last, and it became clear that I would be late to my other job if I didn't speak up. I respectfully addressed the situation with the manager when it was appropriate, apologized if I had had anything to do with the misunderstanding, and told her I was going to need to leave. She was really nice about it, and the next time I came in for a shift, she told me that she had reviewed our email exchange and realized that she had made the scheduling mistake. After that, we had a great relationship with excellent communication."

There's always a lot going on at Home Bargains -- our stores are large with several departments, which means that the management team is always hard at work keeping track of what's going on in every area of the store. Strong communication skills are key to accomplishing their tasks, but miscommunication still happens from time to time. Talk to the interviewer about how you approach a situation where miscommunication has happened between you and a manager or supervisor. What did you learn from that situation?

"I have had great supervisors in my previous positions; however, if faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."

"I always look for clarification when being managed or when managing others, often I will repeat myself and ask " does that make sense " for example as we can all be guilty of not being clear at times.When a superior communicates information to me I'll always say back " so you want ABC and 123?" simply to clarify and show that I'm on board."

What type of manager brings out the best in you?

"The best manager I ever had really embodied the servant leadership paradigm. She made it common practice to have one-on-one meetings with each of her team-members every month or so to talk about our engagement in the work as well as what she could be doing better to bring out our best. The fact that she asked what -she- could do better instead of assuming her employees were the only ones with room for improvement spoke volumes to me. She's a leader I really admire."

"I really believe in being a brand ambassador when I'm at work, so I always do my best to make sure that customers' needs are met regardless of their attitude. "I did very well in math during High School and am comfortable with the math skills required when it comes to accepting cash, balancing a cash float, and performing inventory-related tasks."

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."
