Being an effective Marketing Director requires strong analytical skills AND a creative approach. The interviewer wants to know which of these characteristics best defines your approach. Your answer will give the interviewer insight into your strengths and help them determine if you'd be a good fit for the job.
While it might be tempting to say, "My approach is an equal mix of creativity and analysis," that is likely to be seen as taking the easy way out. You most likely favor one approach over the other, so it's best to emphasize how your approach has been successful in the past while acknowledging the importance of the other approach.
"I think both aspects are important, but I approach marketing with a more analytical frame of mind. For example, I like to break down a product launch from start to finish, strategically thinking about the product itself, the target audience, how to best connect with them, and then moving into the components of the actual campaign. Figuring out how to move from the big picture goals into the individual pieces that make it possible to achieve success is what excites me about being a marketing director. Of course, seeing all the pieces come back together is exciting too, and I always look forward to reviewing the results of my team, which again speaks to my analytical approach."
