The interviewer asks this question to see how you handle disciplinary measures with your crew and conflict resolution in the workplace. The interviewer wants to hear that your values align with theirs and that you are firm yet fair in your approach. Describe how you would handle this situation as a Construction Superintendent.

If you know the company culture and how they prefer to handle disciplinary measures, align your response with the company's wishes. If you do not know how the company handles late employees or how they discipline their staff, describe how you have dealt with this situation in the past.

Avoid saying that you become hostile, violent, or ignore your crew member. If you cannot maturely approach a team member, ask them why they were late, and come to a resolution, the interviewer will look for someone who can.

"I would never let the situation get to that point. When I first start working with a new crew, I let them know my expectations. I tell them that they need to be on time and ready to work at the beginning of each shift, and if they are going to be late or call off work, I need to be notified as soon as possible. I will work with my crew if they communicate with me the reason for being late, but I do not tolerate chronic tardiness. If I had a crew member who was consistently late, I would ask them privately why they were late and help them come to a solution to be to work on time."
