Scoring your communication skills on a scale of 1-10 should be the footnote of your answer. How you justify your evaluation of your skills is more important to the interviewer. Everyone has their own communication style; however, you should place more emphasis on your skill level rather than focusing solely on your style. Key points to touch on are your non-defensive communication skills, being an active listener, and your ability to mirror, validate and empathize. When we communicate non-defensively, we objectify a situation. Objectifying the situation with an emotionally mature understanding of where things went wrong places focus on how communication can be improved for the team, rather than generating defensiveness by casting blame. By asking clarifying questions, you can gather information to gain a mature understanding of the situational landscape. Extra points if you can adapt your communication style to that of others, especially where others are less skilled and less adaptable.
