Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

A consumer product sales organization is driven by data and information and your role with Procter and Gamble may find you being a purveyor of that information for the organization. Whether you will be working face to face with customers/consumers or solely with fellow colleagues at the organization, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you are comfortable talking in front of large groups and presenting.

      How to Answer

Public speaking can be intimidating, so assure the interviewer that you are capable of communicating well in front of large groups. If you have any formal training in public speaking, be sure to discuss that. Perhaps you have so much experience that it comes second nature. Assure the interviewer that you are capable of giving presentations should it be required in your role with Procter and Gamble and use any examples of times you've had to do this during your career.

      1st Answer Example

"In my current role, I am responsible for regularly presenting to my team of 43 staff, as well as to our entire warehouse team of more than 200. I have also been part of my local Toastmasters group, which helped a great deal. Overall, I feel that I am a confident public speaker as long as I prepare my materials and know my subject well."

      2nd Answer Example

"I do not have a lot of experience in presenting to large groups, but I do present regularly to groups averaging around 4 to 6 people. I am a confident speaker in that setting and am sure that I could present in front of many people. I'd be happy to take on that challenge here at Procter and Gamble."

"In University, we had to present in almost all of our classes, and I had to present to groups of 30-50 persons. I also was part of the Expo Science fair where thousand of persons were present while I presented. Generally, I feel a little unease at the beginning, but once I get talking, everything goes smoothly!"

      Marcie's Feedback

Great! It sounds like you have a lot of experience speaking publically and that you excel at it. Build out your response even more by giving some examples of topics that you presented while in college and while at the Expo Science Fair. Giving more information about the Expo Science Fair, in particular, will be interesting to the interviewer and help to make your answer more memorable. (For example, why did you get asked to present? What topic did you present? How did the audience respond to your presentation?) Also, connect your past experience to the new role. Say something like: 'I'm confident that this past public speaking experience will help me to effectively present to audiences within this new position.'
