As with any question about the Mayo Clinic, the interviewer wants to see that you have done your homework and learned all you can about the organization you want to work for. When researching the Mayo Clinic's website, you will see the history behind the name and its origin. Mayo is a family name originating from William Worrall Mayo, M.D., a frontier doctor who settled his family in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Mayo was appointed an examining surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War. Show the interviewer you have done your homework by briefly explaining how the Mayo Clinic got its name.

"I loved learning the history behind the name during my research. The Mayo Clinic was named after the Mayo family, who founded the medical institution. Dr. William Worrall Mayo moved to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1863 and began practicing medicine. His sons, William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, joined him in his practice, and together they built a reputation for excellence in medical care. In 1919, the Mayo family donated the hospital to the nonprofit Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, which continues to operate the Mayo Clinic to this day."
