Nursing in the oncology and cancer care setting puts patient care and relationships at the forefront of the work, mostly because the patient-nurse relationship helps build support and morale for the patient who is going through a very tough time in their life. There will be many ways that your interviewer will be trying to assess just how patient-focused you are in your work, and this question gives you the opportunity to shine a light on what has been your most positive patient-related experience. Take the time to think back over the course of your career and come prepared to talk about a time that highlights the work you put into the relationship, how it personally impacted you, and what outcome came from it.

"Early in my career in the emergency care setting, a mother brought in a young patient who was experiencing severe stomach pain and some bleeding. While in obvious pain, the patient was trying her hardest to find humor in her visit throughout numerous testing processes. During the few hours she was under my care, we played games, made puppets, and told jokes to each other. This really helped open the patient up to talking about the discomfort she was experiencing and helped lead to an eventual common surgery. I always look back to this experience with this patient because it taught me that doing the little things for a patient that are important are what makes a scary situation much easier for them."
