As you are hopefully aware as a nursing professional, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is a federal law that sets standards to protect the sensitive health information of patients. In the cancer care setting, ensuring that patient health data and information is kept secure is a vital task of the oncology nurse in caring for each patient and your interviewer needs to know you take this very seriously. This is the time for you to discuss how you do the little things right in your work, like ensuring that the EHR is locked when you walk away and not discussing patient details with people outside of the direct care team. This is also a great opportunity to talk about any formal training you've had in HIPAA compliance.

"Patient confidentiality and protection of their information is something that I have always taken seriously in my work and will continue to do so as an oncology nurse. It's a small world and I can see where someone with access to an EHR may want more information on a friend, loved one, or someone they know who may have a cancer diagnosis and I just simply wouldn't let this fly if I was made aware. If employed by your organization, I would take all necessary steps to ensure that any breach of privacy was reported through the proper channel. Each year with my current employer, I'm required to take and pass courses in HIPAA and compliance rules and make sure that these are a priority because I know their importance."
