Advance care planning is very important for patients diagnosed with cancer and their families, and this includes both curable and incurable cancer. While the patient has the final say in their care planning, the oncology nursing team plays a vital role in ensuring that patients and their families are well-educated and versed in the care options the patient faces, the pros and cons of each path and the goals that each path could contain. Communication and education are paramount here, so be sure to reiterate to your interviewer that you will help bring this to the table with all patients you would be working with in this role.

"Having gone through advance care planning with my mother-in-law just a few years ago, I'm very familiar with the process and what purpose it serves. I envision that oncology nurses play an important role with patients in having very direct and open conversations with them on their goals of care and when palliative care steps should occur. Oncology nurses also play a vital part in ensuring that a comprehensive assessment of the patient's condition and prognosis is considered. I hope you got the sense today that I would bring stellar patient communication and education skills to this team, and I'm confident that they would be beneficial to the patients I get to consult with on their advance care planning upon diagnosis."
