Among all medical specialties that nurses work in, the field of oncology and cancer care is one of the most patient-centric fields. Oncology nurses spend a large portion of their days face-to-face with patients, helping to build trusting relationships, boosting morale during a very difficult healing journey, and attending to their care needs. To get a sense of just how patient-centric you are in your work, your interviewer poses this question in hopes of hearing that you've received direct feedback on the type of care you provide. Keep in mind that the things you discuss can be verbal feedback you've received from patients, information from patient surveys, or even feedback you've received from a nursing manager or supervisor in the past.

"Thanks for asking. The patients I care for have always been open about how they've really appreciated my approach as a nurse. If you were to talk with any of the current patients I'm providing care for, they would tell you that I am always attentive to their needs, ask them the right questions, and do anything in my power to make them more comfortable. In recent CAHPS surveys, I've been commended for the education that I provide to patients on how to care for themselves at home after being discharged from the hospital. I'm confident that these patient care skills will transition nicely to my role as an oncology nurse and the patients of your cancer center will benefit greatly from my approach to patient care."
