Providing care to patients diagnosed with cancer involves a team effort from physicians, therapists, nurses, social workers, financial navigators, and other clinical staff. There will be plenty of highs and plenty of lows on the job and your interviewer wants to hear that you will take great pride in the team effort you will be a part of in their cancer center. Make sure to put some thought into what your proudest moment has been in the healthcare setting and come prepared to discuss in detail the full effort that was needed to make it such a great moment. Because of the strong patient-focused practice in oncology, try to highlight your proudest moment as one that involved a great outcome for a patient.

"Early in my nursing career, I was very fortunate to be part of a dynamic and hardworking critical care unit where we accomplished many great things with patients who were in dire need of care. My mind always goes back to a time when three young children were admitted into care following emergency surgery after a car accident. With varying injuries, all being complex and potentially life-threatening, seeing how a team of doctors, respiratory therapists, nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists came together over the course of three weeks when all three were finally discharged was amazing. Being a recent graduate, I soaked in as much as I could from my precepting nurses and the physicians I supported and learned so much that I brought forward in my career and would bring to this team as your next oncology nurse. Getting a visit from the three siblings and their parents a month after their discharge, with handmade thank you cards and some treats for all the staff was such a heartwarming moment and one I will never forget."
