There are unfortunately many cancer diagnoses that are terminal and oncology nurses work with those patients on treatments and end-of-life care up until their passing. This is the side of the job that can be most difficult for oncology nurses, given the tight-knit relationships that they develop with their patients over time. If you have experience in handling the death of a patient, make sure to discuss the ways you stayed focused on providing the best environment for the patient and the coping skills you used. If you come from a medical specialty where you haven't dealt with this yet in your career, make sure you reiterate the knowledge and skills you would bring as a new oncology nurse that will help you best handle and cope with this inevitable situation.

"Yes, it's been an all too common experience during my time as a hospice nurse and it's honestly been a situation that I find the most satisfaction in as a nursing professional. Being there to ensure that terminal patients experience as minimal pain as possible and get to experience as best of the end of life as possible is important. I'm the type of nurse and person who becomes emotionally invested in my patients and of course, the death of a patient is always difficult. But knowing that I did my best to help them get the best care and experiences possible helps put me at ease. I think these approaches would work well for me as an oncology nurse with your team."
