A cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment can lead both patients and their loved ones through a wide range of emotions. The most extreme being feelings of sadness and depression. The team considering hiring you as their next oncology nurse needs to hear that you are mentally prepared to navigate this most difficult aspect of the job. The two things you want to reiterate as you answer this question are the fact that you are aware of the emotions your patients will experience and that you have dealt with similar situations successfully in the past. Hopefully, you have some experience that you can draw upon where you provided a positive light for patients.

"Yes, I know I will be one of the most empathetic and emotionally stable nurses you have hired on this team. Having had close family members diagnosed with cancer, I know that feelings of hopelessness, sadness, depression, and death are common and that care providers are the people who need to provide hope and support to them. Having some direct nursing experience in behavioral health has given me great working experience in helping people think about the things that are important in their lives and helping them prioritize those feelings. As an oncology nurse, remaining positive and giving patients a reason to remain positive about their treatment will always be a top priority of mine."
