A patient's cancer diagnosis and new journey in treatment is a scary and life-altering event. With the particular disease they are diagnosed with being unique, individualized and unique care plans per individual are the new wave in cancer treatment and oncology nurses play a vital role in ensuring that patients have the knowledge and tools to best handle their treatments, manage the common side effects of treatment, and do their best to maintain a quality life during treatment. If they're going to seriously consider you for the job, your interviewer will want to hear that you ensure comprehension of information with your patients, that you take into account personal factors in their treatment, and that you involve more than just the patient in how you educate them on their cancer journey.

"As you can see from my resume, I've spent time working in the hospital and outpatient clinic setting and I feel all of my experience in patient education has prepared me well for working with patients that are receiving cancer treatment. First and foremost, I take the time to get to know my patients and assess their literacy levels and their ability to learn what I am teaching them. I utilize all resources I can to provide patients with materials they need to be prepared for their care plan. I never hesitate to involve caregivers, parents, children, or other family members in education on care, because those loved ones often play an integral role in ensuring a great outcome for patients. I think that having an understanding of a patient's home life is important in their education as well, so I ask as many questions as I can to get a better understanding of this."
