This question tests your the breadth of your awareness concerning cultural competence care in the medical industry. Cultural competence care outlines how health providers and organizations deliver health care services that meet the cultural, social, and religious needs of patients and their families.
Although this topic is nuanced, adults of sound mind, who are mentally capable of making their own medical decisions, have every right to refuse a procedure for themselves. Even if doctors strongly object to the patient's decision, they cannot be forced to administer care. Yet, in nearly all cases, parents cannot refuse life-saving care on behalf of their children, even if they state religious beliefs as their reason. However, in emergency situations, doctors may be forced to override a patient's wishes, including religious beliefs, to provide them with the treatment they need to survive. Although these laws vary from state to state, this issue is complex. If you aren't already well versed in the complexities this question raises, do your homework before your interview.

"From what I understand, if the patient is of sound mind and they understand the risk they are taking by refusing medical assistance, I do not have the right to override her religious choice. Many factors could change this, such as an unconscious patient, someone under the influence of a narcotic, or perhaps if the person and I had a significant language barrier. In these situations, I should refer to my facilities' leaders and ethics community. This is a decision I would not feel comfortable making entirely on my own."
