As a new employee with Jetstar Airways, you have to be prepared to handle some strong personalities of colleagues you will be working with and some demanding passengers with their own needs. Your interviewer needs to be assured that you can approach difficult personalities with respect, professionalism, and grace and that you don't hesitate to do what is right in any situation with a person that is hard to communicate with.

"Over the last two years, while obtaining my degree, I worked a retail position in the evenings to help support myself. We had a regular customer who was extremely demanding and rude to all staff. I learned quickly that service with a smile was vital to her because she was a very loyal and passionate customer. I'd like to say that I grew a thick skin when working with her because there were a couple of times when she got upset that I didn't know the exact product she was looking for when I first started. I told her I wasn't aware and that I'd check our inventory quickly for her and talk with a colleague. I then worked diligently to find what she needed. I think this is a vital skill to have in this role at Jetstar Airways."

"I once worked for a leader who was very difficult in meetings and in interacting with groups of others. I took it upon myself to help this person interact better with others. When he would bark orders, I would reiterate what he was trying to say to the group more professionally. It took some time, but he learned to behave in a way that made people want to work with him."

Show the interviewer that you work well with most personalities even though you recognize some folks are difficult to please. Before your interview, think about that one person you have worked with who was hard to please. Perhaps there is someone at work who tries to intimidate others. Talk to the interviewer about what made this person challenging and their relationship with you. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone, and end your response on a positive note.

In my previous role as a nanny, I worked for a family in which the parents were quite demanding. I could see that they meant well, and perhaps some misunderstanding of what was expected of me. After a few months of working for them, I asked to have a meeting so we could all be on the same page. This cleared the air and allowed for open honest communication between everyone.

Jaymie's Feedback
Excellent! You took the initiative to address the conflict in a professional and non-confrontational way. Communication and interpersonal skills are key in this role and your example highlighted them effectively.
