Every day with every member, UnitedHealth Group strives for and values high-quality results in everything they do. Given that the role you are being considered for will likely come with a great deal of autonomy given the sheer size of the organization, the hiring manager needs to have a full understanding that you would come to their team as a reliable and professional decision-maker. Talk about a time you had to use the resources available to you to solve a difficult issue on the job. As you respond during your interview, keep in mind that your interviewer will be focusing on the big picture of what the situation was, why it was a difficult decision for you, and the mindset you took to confidently make a decision. Also, make sure to answer the second question and discuss the results that came from your decision.

"I'm very fortunate because the current position I've held for the last seven years has involved a lot of autonomy and decision-making with the members I care for. This experience makes me a very confident and informed candidate to join the UnitedHealth Group team. Referring members to the correct providers to initially begin requires keen attention to detail and playing in a lot of factors at times. On a home visit a couple of months ago, I was quickly able to see that a patient was really struggling with their breathing and self-care. I took the time to read all of their vitals, provide a quick mental health screening, and then about thought the next course of action. Scheduling an appointment with their primary care doc and urgent care were considered, but I ultimately knew in my gut that getting them to the ER was the right move for them. The member was very hesitant, but I'm glad my persuasion skills paid off for them because they were admitted to the hospital, monitored, and eventually taken into surgery for a partial blood clot. Sometimes in a role like this, we have to rely on gut feelings to make difficult decisions, hopefully, this is a key skill you're looking for at UnitedHealth Group."
