2. Have you ever been in a work environment where competition was fierce and outperforming the competition was a priority?
How to Answer
Even though they serve over 51 million members around the world, the reality is that it's still a small slice of the general population that UnitedHealth Group impacts. Other large insurers like Humana, Cigna, and Aetna are in constant competition with UHG. Doing things better than the competition is important in the role you will be joining. While discussing any competitive environments you have been a part of in the past, your interviewer will be keying in on your ability to see how the role you will be performing will have an impact on retaining members and even potentially gaining new members. Talk about the excellent service and compassion you will bring to the job every day to ensure this.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 1st, 2024
Answer Example
"Yes, I certainly have been and I really thrive in this type of environment. I'm a competitive person by nature having been an athlete my entire life in baseball, basketball, and track. Since graduating from college, the organization I've worked for has had stiff competition and has been working to recruit new patients and retain existing patients through excellent customer service, accuracy in my work, and building great relationships with those I work closely with. I know that UnitedHealth Group has great competitors across the country and even the world and that ensuring your members feel loved and cared for is important. In this role, I will always take great pride in representing UHG and living your values in every action and interaction to help ensure the future success of the organization."

3. Are you considering any other job opportunities at this time and, if so, where are you at in process with those?
How to Answer
Scratching at the surface on a question like this, the hiring manager you are interviewing with is trying to get a feel for where you are at with any other potential job applications to get an honest feel for if you'll be willing and ready to accept a job offer from UnitedHealth Group or if that decision may take time. Knowing that you are in any final interview stages elsewhere can also prompt them to take quick action following your interview if you emerge as the top candidate. But going a bit deeper, this question also gives the hiring manager the chance to see what interests you depending on how much information you give. Be aware that certain answers here can raise red flags, like if the types of jobs you are applying for are across different industries, jobs, or responsibilities. Try to be as open and honest as you can here, while also reiterating your passion and commitment to help serve the members of UnitedHealth Group.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 1st, 2024
Answer Example
"When I applied for this position with UnitedHealth Group, I submitted another application for a very similar role elsewhere in this region with our relocation here as a family. Once I completed the interview with your HR team, I was contacted by the other company for a phone interview and I have postponed interest in that position at this time because of the amazing things I've learned about working for UHG and this role in particular. From what I've further learned with you today, I'm so excited about this opportunity and would be ready to quickly accept an offer if I was fortunate to receive one."

How to Answer
As you've progressed through the interview stages with UnitedHealth Group and find yourself with the hiring manager in the final round, the one thing that should have become abundantly clear about the organization is their commitment and passion for what they do. Think back to what led you into this career path and what your motivating factors were, and come prepared to discuss how you still get excited to this day in the work that you do and will continue to as a new team member at UHG.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 1st, 2024
Answer Example
"As you saw in my resume and we discussed today, I spent the early part of my career as an administrative assistant and receptionist in a few different private businesses. The foundation of knowledge I received in customer service, administrative coordination, and general office duties really set the basis for my career. I eventually got to a point where I wanted my work to mean more and having a good friend in the medical industry really opened my eyes to where I could take my career. I've spent the last six years working in a fast-paced clinical setting, coordinating patient appointments, greeting patients in-person, and making follow-up phone calls to them. I love helping to make a difference in the day of a person that is sick, hurt, or struggling and look forward to continuing to do that with UnitedHealth Group members in this role."

7. As the person that this role will report to, what final questions do you have for me?
How to Answer
As you get to the final interview stage at UnitedHealth Group and have the time to talk in-depth with the hiring manager, you have hopefully learned many things along the way about the organization and the role itself. Since this is the final interview, the hiring manager wants to be assured that you are armed with all of the information you need for a decision if a job offer were to come your way in the near future. As you prepare for this managerial round interview with UHG, be sure to have your questions prepared (and even written down) and come to the interview with your questions in hand. Anything goes with the hiring manager, so ensure that you show your continued interest with the questions you ask.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 1st, 2024
Answer Example
"I appreciate you asking this! Throughout my time applying, meeting with Human Resources and now getting to talk with you, the idea of coming to work for UnitedHealth Group just continues to get stronger. Your mission to improve the overall health and well-being of your members aren't just words on paper, but is something that this organization lives through the work you do and it is a mission I would love to be a part of. For me right now, I'd love to learn more about what the onboarding and orientation process will look like for the candidate you hire for the role. Can you talk a bit more about what you envision the orientation process to look like and what your expectations will be for the person you hire to be up and running on their own in this role? Also, this would be my first role moving to a remote working environment. I'm confident that I would transition to this environment at UnitedHealth Group seamlessly but am genuinely curious if others on your team have made this transition in recent years."

8. How would you describe your work style and do you think it will bode well for success in this role at UnitedHealth Group?
How to Answer
Before your final step of UnitedHealth Group's interview process where you'll meet with the hiring manager you'll be working under, it's important that you really study and familiarize yourself with the workplace culture you'll be joining there. The first thing that becomes abundantly clear about UHG is that they are committed to their members and a diverse and inclusive workplace. They also care deeply about their staff. While this may seem like a very vague question, just know that is asked intentionally to see what direction you will take your answer. What you ideally want to demonstrate is that your work style relies on being part of a dynamic team, being a great communicator, and that you are focused on helping out for the greater good. UHG and the hiring manager you are interviewing with want individuals who are mission-driven, so be sure to display that.
Written by Ryan Brunner on April 1st, 2024
Answer Example
"I'd be more than happy to talk about my work style and who you'd be getting in me on this team at UnitedHealth Group. I pride myself on the fact that my colleagues and leaders have always said that I'm a great team player and great communicator on the job. I live by the mantra that together everyone achieves more and being there to support colleagues, collaborate together, and do bigger things as part of a larger team is what drives me in my work. If I'm fortunate enough to join your amazing team, you'll quickly see that my communication skills are professional, friendly, and fun on a daily basis. Your team will easily welcome my collaborative nature. On top of this, I would say my work style is very goal-oriented. My priorities in my work are typically set by the impact they have on external customers and long-term projects that keep progress moving forward. In this role with UHG, that focus will shift for me to your members who will be most impacted by my work."

9. Walk me through a recent difficult decision you had to make on the job. Did your thought process and actions lead to a great end result?
How to Answer
Every day with every member, UnitedHealth Group strives for and values high-quality results in everything they do. Given that the role you are being considered for will likely come with a great deal of autonomy given the sheer size of the organization, the hiring manager needs to have a full understanding that you would come to their team as a reliable and professional decision-maker. Talk about a time you had to use the resources available to you to solve a difficult issue on the job. As you respond during your interview, keep in mind that your interviewer will be focusing on the big picture of what the situation was, why it was a difficult decision for you, and the mindset you took to confidently make a decision. Also, make sure to answer the second question and discuss the results that came from your decision.
Written by Ryan Brunner on March 29th, 2024
Answer Example
"I'm very fortunate because the current position I've held for the last seven years has involved a lot of autonomy and decision-making with the members I care for. This experience makes me a very confident and informed candidate to join the UnitedHealth Group team. Referring members to the correct providers to initially begin requires keen attention to detail and playing in a lot of factors at times. On a home visit a couple of months ago, I was quickly able to see that a patient was really struggling with their breathing and self-care. I took the time to read all of their vitals, provide a quick mental health screening, and then about thought the next course of action. Scheduling an appointment with their primary care doc and urgent care were considered, but I ultimately knew in my gut that getting them to the ER was the right move for them. The member was very hesitant, but I'm glad my persuasion skills paid off for them because they were admitted to the hospital, monitored, and eventually taken into surgery for a partial blood clot. Sometimes in a role like this, we have to rely on gut feelings to make difficult decisions, hopefully, this is a key skill you're looking for at UnitedHealth Group."

10. What prompted you to take on a new job search at this point in your career?
How to Answer
With two distinct and unique businesses in Optum and UnitedHealthcare under their umbrella and being highly subspecialized in many aspects of the patient care journey at UnitedHealth Group, the hiring manager needs to be assured that you took on a new job search for the right reasons. While there are many directions you can take your answer, there are definitely some dos and don'ts you should abide by. First, keep your answer positive and focus on yourself and your career goals. There is no reason that you should talk negatively about your current employer or colleagues because that could make you appear to be a problem employee to the hiring manager. Focus your answer on how this opportunity at UHG will help provide you with a better future.
Written by Ryan Brunner on March 29th, 2024
Answer Example
"Over the last few years, I've felt like I've really reached the full potential of what I can do and what I can be in my current role. Just a few months ago, I began a search for a new opportunity with a company I can learn and grow with. Some of my priorities in looking at new opportunities were to find employment with a company that is stable, one that takes good care of its people, and one that is driven by a mission that I can get behind. I really appreciate UnitedHealth Group's amazing recruitment experience, especially getting face-to-face with you as the hiring manager. From great benefits like a 401(k) savings plan and stock purchase options to the passionate and innovative work environment on this team, I know that this is a great fit for me and my future here."

11. Why do you believe you are the best candidate to join this team at UnitedHealth Group?
How to Answer
Throughout the interview process at UnitedHealth Group, you've spent a good deal of time submitting video responses and discussing with a recruiter the actual skills and knowledge you would bring to the role. In the final interview stage with the hiring manager, they want you to put the entire puzzle together for them on why you should be the candidate they offer the job to. You only will get one shot at giving your best sales pitch on yourself, so take advantage of that by recapping all of the skills you would bring to the job that would make this a seamless transition for UHG and the long-term commitment you are prepared to give.
Written by Ryan Brunner on March 29th, 2024

The passion that this company displays in improving overall healthcare for millions of people is inspiring and something I would love to be a part of. As you can see from my resume and as we've discussed today, my revenue cycle management experience is profound and I've worked with patient access teams, patient admissions in both the clinic and hospital setting, and patient billing. I would bring vast experience in data analytics and process improvement techniques to help ensure that UHG is functioning at the highest levels from a business analyst perspective."

12. Have you ever had an idea for improvement in the workplace? If so, how did you act on the idea?
How to Answer
Since their humble beginnings back in 1977, UnitedHealth Group's forward-thinking has revolutionized the way care is provided for people around the country and world with innovations like creative pharmacy benefits management and several mergers and acquisitions over the years. Since innovation is one of their core values, knowing that you can help improve things for the future by learning from the past will be an important quality that the hiring manager is looking for in their ideal candidate. Whether on a very large or small scale, try to think about a time from your past when you took an idea for improvement, brought it forward to those necessary to approve, and then did the legwork to ensure that the new process or idea helped improve things moving forward.
Written by Ryan Brunner on March 29th, 2024
Answer Example
"Yes, I've always been of the mindset that change sparks improvement and fearing new ways of doing things hinders progress. It's quite evident that UnitedHealth Group has this same mindset, given your amazing growth and market dominance in a relatively short period of time of your existence. Just last year on my current job, my clinic was experiencing some severe waiting times for patients and it was causing an uncomfortable amount of disgruntled people. At that time, our patient waiting room was pretty boring, with very little reading materials or anything else to keep them entertained. Knowing we had the space, I asked in a staff meeting if it would be possible to get a television and a few more magazine subscriptions to help keep patients busy while waiting. Fortunately, the clinic manager had the budget for these items and loved the idea. I helped to select HGTV as the standard channel we would keep the TV on and pick out a few of the new subscriptions we would get for patients to read since I knew their demographics well."

Answer Example
"When I look back upon my career to this point and the feedback I've received from colleagues and leaders of mine, I would consider myself a servant leader who always seeks to put the needs and development of staff as a priority and believes in acting as a form of leadership. With new staff on my team that I've mentored over the years, I believe in a hands-on training approach and letting people get their feet wet and even make a few mistakes along the way to learn. My approachable and calm demeanor will not only benefit the UnitedHealth Group members I will be working with, but will also have a profound impact on this great team I will be joining. I have no doubt that your staff will quickly gravitate towards my style of working, having fun, and doing better for just a small sliver of UHG's membership base."

15. What are your ultimate career goals and do you see those fitting in here at UnitedHealth Group?
How to Answer
UnitedHealth Group prides itself on its empowering culture that allows staff to grow and develop. "I really appreciate you asking this question, because it's something I've been putting a lot more thought into over the last year and really the reason why I applied for this role with UnitedHealth Group. Coming aboard here as a patient care coordinator will give me the opportunity to gain a ton of experience in your patient care process and learn the entire operation of the business. As a natural leader, I'd love to work my way into a supervisory role down the road. I would bring many leadership skills to your UHG team, including the ability to train individuals effectively and to mentor people who are struggling on the job."

16. What unique experience or training do you have that make you an excellent fit for this role at UnitedHealth Group?
How to Answer
Throughout the interview process with UnitedHealth Group, you will walk through your CV and experience with the HR team and now the hiring manager. They'll all have a very good feel for the work-related experience you bring to the job, but the hiring manager takes it a step further here by having you discuss what you feel is the most unique experience or training you have that sets you apart from any other candidates. Think about a part of your work history that is likely unique to you that will enable you to find immediate success in the job you are interviewing for. If you need to, be sure to thoroughly comb through the job description once again to find that one piece from your past that will make you stand out following the interview process.
Written by Ryan Brunner on March 28th, 2024
Answer Example
"The Optum NowClinic is certainly changing the way healthcare is delivered in real-time for patients throughout the country and something I'm very excited to be a part of. During the heat of the pandemic back in late 2020 and early 2021, I gained real-world first-hand experience providing telemedicine to patients in my current role and it's something that I became very proficient in quickly. As part of this team at UnitedHealth Group, I would bring experience consulting with patients via phone, video chat, and mobile app interactions to help diagnose and treat simple illnesses like ear infections, strep throat, and bronchitis. This experience and my success in it has really drawn me to this role here."

How to Answer
One of UnitedHealth Group's core values is relationships and the 439,000 employees there live this value daily by working together to collaborate for better outcomes for their members. "If you hire me to join this amazing team at UnitedHealth Group, you will be getting a fun-loving and highly motivated person to help bring the best care to your members. Outside of work, my family is my top priority. My husband and I are raising three amazing kids. Our oldest is about to enter high school this fall, our middle child will be going into 7th grade, and our youngest is a year behind, about to head into 6th grade. Our children are very active in Scouts, athletics, and other outdoor activities that in turn keep us on our toes at all times. I help coach soccer and basketball for our daughters and really love being a positive influence on the kids to help them learn life lessons and to better themselves as athletes. 18. How do you prefer to receive direct feedback on your work?
How to Answer
Every manager/director/supervisor has their own style for giving direct feedback to their subordinates and that's just human nature. The hiring manager at UnitedHealth Group wants to get a feel for how you both prefer to receive feedback and how well you receive any constructive criticism and put it to work on the job. Some managers are more authoritative, whereas others can be more informal and relaxed about it. You likely won't get a feel for this manager at UHG throughout the interview, so it's best to be as honest as possible. What will be important as you answer this question is to highlight how you can take feedback positively and make improvements as necessary. I'm also never hesitant to discuss work improvement with colleagues when I notice things. I always take a positive approach and lay things out for my colleagues because this is the approach I prefer for myself."

20. How do you typically handle conflicts that occur in the workplace?
How to Answer
The fast-paced and passionate workplace culture at UnitedHealth Group can certainly lead to staff conflicts from time to time. It's inevitable in any workplace, so the hiring manager you are interviewing with wants to hear that you can deal with conflict in a professional, respectful, and productive manner. UHG subsidiary Optum has a great page on their website that gives amazing strategies for how to handle conflict in the workplace and it's a great idea to check this out before your interview. You ideally want to highlight your ability to always keep a positive attitude, stay focused on the task at hand (versus the conflict), and handle things as quickly as possible to prevent them from dragging out. Try to use a direct example of a time you diffused a situation in the past.
Written by Ryan Brunner on March 25th, 2024
Answer Example
"When passionate minds and dedicated people set out to do something, there is bound to be some disagreement and the key to working through those is always to listen to each other, see each other's side of the coin, and find the best resolution moving forward. I don't take feedback, thoughts, or criticism personally, because it is typically given in the best interest of a job well done. Just a few weeks ago, a colleague and I were collaborating on the care of a patient and we had a pretty distinct disagreement on how to proceed. I picked up the phone right away after a couple of email exchanges so we could talk it out. We each spoke about why we felt like we did and I quickly saw things from his perspective. I realized it was a good idea and he was able to persuade me to change my mind. I want you to know that as part of your team here at UnitedHealth Group, I would always see this type of conflict as productive and welcome it at any time in the best interest of the members here."

UnitedHealth Group values providing resources, mentoring, and training to their staff to help them grow and develop in their long-term careers with the organization. The hiring manager wants to hire an individual who is personally motivated to do this as well. In posing this question during your time together, the hiring manager is ideally looking to hear that you are active in some of the industry organizations and societies in your field and that you take advantage of any training and development opportunities that come your way. "Since graduating from college and entering this field, I've been an active member of both the CSWA and the NASW. Both organizations are great about providing CE credits and over the last few years I've participated in CE credits in substance abuse, reproductive healthcare, and human trafficking. I also take advantage when I can attend national conferences because they are such a great way to hear speakers on topics related to my work and to network with other clinical social workers throughout the country. The Clinical Social Work Journal also has great peer-reviewed articles that provide great tips for my work."

Answer Example
"In a territory like this at UnitedHealth Group, the sheer number of members your field team cares for is astronomical and takes a great amount of organization, detail, and focus to ensure that every member receives the time and care they deserve. I'm happy to say that my current caseload of over 150 in-home patients requires the same. Technology has certainly changed in my time in this field and I've always learned and embraced tools to use to schedule meetings and keep myself organized. My first priorities are always the patient visits I have on my calendar that day. I utilize an online calendar tool my company provides that builds in travel time and hour-long visits at each patient's home. I like to block my calendar for 3-4 days of visits per week and am very organized in ensuring that I don't have wasted travel time each week. I love to schedule entire office days to catch up on documentation, phone calls, and other administrative tasks. I'd love to learn more about the tools and resources this team uses if you have time to explain."

Answer Example
"Last year, I was the care manager for a patient who was in a very difficult health and financial situation, compounded by the fact that they didn't have any immediate family or caregivers in the area. I worked diligently to help find immediate wound care treatments for him and this included an initial hospitalization. I communicated closely with the physician and care team to get an idea of when he would be discharged. Knowing that being in his own home was important to him, I made several calls to get in-home care set up for him on a daily basis. Being that his coverage was limited, I had to be very thorough in finding care at the right cost and the right services. To this day, he is still doing very well in his home as I observe on the monthly call to his home. He always brings a smile to my face and I'm looking to bring this same level of service to your team and members at UnitedHealth Group."

24. Do you have any salary requirements if you are offered the chance to join UnitedHealth Group?
How to Answer
In the final stage of interviewing with UnitedHealth Group, ensuring that you will take their offer seriously will be important to your interviewer. UHG doesn't post salaries or salary ranges on their careers site, so this is where your homework ahead of your interview will hopefully come into play. The key is to not disqualify yourself in the answer you give, so it is okay to keep your answer broader and not pinpoint an exact number. A great way to answer a question like this is to use your current salary as a basis and highlight their amazing benefits package that includes paid time off, a comprehensive health insurance plan, great retirement/stock options, and parental leave.

Answer Example
"I appreciate you asking this. First and foremost, I would be so excited to receive an offer to join the UHG team and would only need about a day or two to discuss with my spouse. Prior to applying and in talking with the HR team, ensuring that important benefits like health insurance, 401k, and paid time off were available are very important to me and my family and your benefit package both meets and exceeds where I'm currently at. From a compensation perspective, my current salary is $83,000 annually per last year's W2. Any reasonable offer that matches my years of experience with the salary range for this position will be seriously considered and exciting for me and my family."
